What Is Musk in Perfume? Smell, Types and Examples
Musk is the soft, skin-like warmth in the base of many perfumes, and today it is made in the laboratory or drawn from ambrette seed. This guide explains what it is, how it smells and how eight niche perfumes use it.
Musk is on more note lists than almost any other material, and it is the one people find hardest to describe. It is rarely the first thing you notice in a perfume. It is the soft, warm, slightly skin-like background that makes everything else feel finished.
This guide explains what musk is today, how it smells and what it does in a perfume. To make it concrete we use eight perfumes from our range in which a house puts musk in the foreground, each from a different house and each chosen to show a different side of the note. It is not a ranking. About a third of our range lists musk somewhere, and you can see all of it in the musk perfumes collection.
What musk is
The word first meant a secretion of the musk deer, which perfumers valued for its warmth and its persistence. That material is not part of modern perfumery. The musks in the perfumes on this page are made in the laboratory, and they form a whole family of molecules, not a single ingredient.
Houses say so themselves. Zoologist states that every animal musk in its ingredient lists is synthetic. BORNTOSTANDOUT says its synthetics replace animal-derived materials, and Maison Crivelli commits to using no ingredients of animal origin.
There is also a plant source. Ambrette is the seed of a plant, and it gives a musky effect of its own. You will meet it below as ambrette seed, ambrette seeds absolute or simply ambrette.
How musk smells
There are four broad faces, and a perfume often shows more than one.
- Clean. The white musks: fresh laundry, soap, a pressed shirt.
- Powdery. Soft and cosmetic, often next to iris, violet or rose.
- Skin-like. Warm, close and a little salty, closer to a clean body than to a fragrance.
- Warm and sweet. Musk under amber and vanilla, dense and enveloping.
Musk molecules are large and evaporate slowly, which is why they sit in the base. People also differ in how well they smell them. It is common to pick up one particular musk only faintly, and perfumers usually blend several for that reason. If a musk perfume seems to have no scent on you at first, give it a few minutes and ask someone else.
Eight perfumes, eight sides of musk
Clean and white
Byredo Blanche is an eau de parfum with aldehyde and rose centifolia on top, peony and violet in the heart, and musks and sandalwood in the base. Byredo describes the feeling of a fresh white shirt against the skin.

Juliette Has a Gun Musc Invisible has three notes: jasmine absolute, cotton flower and white musk. For this eau de parfum the house speaks of clean skin that has only just begun to warm up.

Maison Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning is an eau de toilette about freshly washed linen sheets. A pear accord, a lily of the valley accord and aldehydes open it, an iris accord, rose absolute and an orange flower accord form the heart, and Indonesian patchouli oil, ambrette seeds absolute and white musks make the base.

Icy and powdery
Les Eaux Primordiales Musk Superfluide is an eau de parfum that the house calls an icy white musk. Aldehydes, neroli and ambrette are on top, rose, iris and violet in the heart, and benzoin, white musks and ambroxan in the base.

From a plant
Matière Première Parisian Musc is built on ambrette seed from Peru, which the house calls the only plant-based natural musk. The other notes of this eau de parfum are cedar oil from Virginia, ambrettolide, ambroxan and fig leaf, given as one list. The house explains that the ambrettolide amplifies the musk and that the ambroxan binds wood to musk.

A molecule with a name
Essential Parfums The Musc names its musk: Nirvanolide. The house sets it beside beeswax absolute, with red ginger from Laos, lavandin grosso from France and Australian sandalwood, in an eau de parfum it describes as fresh, honeyed and warm.

Skin-like
Le Labo Another 13 is an eau de parfum of three notes: ambroxyde, jasmine and moss. Le Labo calls ambroxyde a synthetic animal musk and says the jasmine and the moss add spike and shine to that musky base.

Warm and ambery
Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur shows the other end of the scale. Bergamot, mandarin and lavender open this eau de parfum, amber, vanilla and musk form the heart, and sandalwood and musk make the base. The house files it under amber and points out that it contains no flowers.

How to choose a musk perfume
Decide which face you are after. For clean and quiet, read the lists for white musk, aldehydes and images of cotton or linen, and look at our musky perfumes. For soft and cosmetic, look for iris and violet next to the musk, as in the powdery perfumes. For warmth, look for amber, vanilla and sandalwood around it.
Short note lists are typical of this family, and they are not a sign of a simple perfume. With so few notes each one has room, and the musk is free to merge with the skin of the person wearing it. That is also why musk perfumes are popular for combining with other scents. Our guide on how to read a fragrance pyramid explains what short and long lists tell you, and the guide on how to apply perfume covers where to spray. To compare houses, go to the brands page.
Frequently asked questions
How does musk smell?
Soft, warm and close to the skin. Depending on the type it can be clean as fresh laundry, powdery, skin-like or warm and sweet. It is rarely loud, and it usually forms the background of a perfume.
Is white musk the same as musk?
White musk is one part of the family: the clean, soapy musks that recall fresh laundry. Musk as a whole also covers powdery, skin-like and warm types, and houses use the plain word for all of them.
Why can I hardly smell my musk perfume?
Noses differ in how well they pick up particular musk molecules, and you also get used to a scent you wear yourself. Wait a few minutes, smell from a little distance and ask someone else before you add more.
