What eau de toilette means in practice
Eau de toilette is the lighter step on the concentration scale, below eau de parfum. It holds less perfume oil, so it feels more open and airy, and it tends to show the top and heart of a perfume more than a dense base. That is why so many eaux de toilette are fresh, floral, citrus or green: the concentration suits materials that are bright rather than heavy.
Light does not mean thin. In this collection an eau de toilette can be a smoky wood fire, a jazz club of rum and tobacco, or a forest of cedar and sandalwood. It simply wears closer and more gently than a richer version of the same idea. Remember that the name is a convention, not a rule, so each house decides what it means.
How to choose an eau de toilette
An eau de toilette is the natural choice for warm weather, for the office and for daily wear, and for anyone who does not want a perfume to travel far. Because it is lighter, it can take a generous hand: two to four sprays are common, and applying again is easy. Eaux de toilette also reward a close look at the notes, because light concentrations show every material clearly. A short, flat note list, as several houses publish, is often enough to tell you what to expect: tuberose and sea, sandalwood and cedar, juniper and pepper.
