Tuberose perfumes

A flower with two sides

Tuberose is a tall, night-scented bloom whose absolute is rich and powerful. It is creamy and sweet, with a green, almost camphor-like edge at first and a milky, buttery softness later. Houses sometimes show both, and our data includes a perfume that writes tuberose with a fresh aspect at the top and a milky aspect in the base. Because it is so strong, perfumers handle it with care, giving it room or tempering it with other materials.

How it behaves

Tuberose is a heart note with a lot of volume. It pairs naturally with jasmine, gardenia and orange blossom for a full white bouquet. It can be sharpened by citrus, green notes or spice, and darkened by leather, resin or amber. Musks and sandalwood turn it soft and skin-like. Next to fruit it becomes juicy, and next to vanilla it becomes custardy.

• Frederic Malle Carnal Flower is the clearest portrait: tuberose with a fresh aspect and water fruits (melon) at the top, tuberose with a milky aspect and musk in the base. Frederic Malle files it as floral.
• Amouage Honour Woman puts tuberose in a heart with jasmine, gardenia, lily of the valley and carnation, between black pepper, rhubarb leaves and coriander and a base of vetiver, frankincense, amber, opoponax and leather. Amouage calls it white floral.
• Argos Love Triumphs Over War lists tuberose among a bright opening with bergamot, lemon, orange blossom, rose petals, raspberry and blackcurrant, above a spiced heart and an amber and sandalwood base. Argos files it as floral, oriental and woody.
• Maison Crivelli Tubéreuse Astrale has no pyramid: Maison Crivelli names tuberose absolute with cinnamon bark, osmanthus, carrot seeds, cistus, a leather accord and musks, and calls it floral leather.
• Nishane Hundred Silent Ways opens on tuberose with mandarin and peach, moves to white jasmine, gardenia and orris and ends on vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver. Nishane files it as floral, gourmand and musky.
• Pernoire Luvani lists tuberose in the opening with moonflower, incense and jasmine, above a heart of hazelnut leaves, vanilla, guaiac wood, nutmeg and white flowers. See Pernoire.
• Tiziana Terenzi Rosso Pompei places tuberose in a heart of ambergris, magnolia, lily of the valley and royal jasmine, below a grapefruit and lemon opening. Tiziana Terenzi calls it fruity.

Choosing a tuberose perfume

Think about intensity. Tuberose with citrus, fruit or spice at the top feels lively and open. With leather, amber or incense it is dark and dramatic. With musk and sandalwood it is soft and intimate. If you find white flowers overwhelming, choose a perfume where tuberose is one voice among several, with a woody or musky base to settle it, and sample carefully before committing to a larger bottle.
