Vetiver perfumes

A grass that is distilled at the root

Vetiver is a tall grass, and its oil comes from the roots, which are dug up, dried and steam-distilled. Haiti, Indonesia (Java) and Reunion are among the best-known sources. The smell is earthy, woody and smoky, with a grassy, slightly bitter and nutty side. Depending on the origin and the processing, it can be clean and green or dark and almost leathery. Pyramids write vetiver, Java vetiver or vetiver oil.

What vetiver does

Vetiver is a base note and one of the most persistent materials in a composition. It is used as a skeleton: it supports citrus and fresh notes, dries out sweet or floral ones, and gives woody perfumes a green, earthy finish. It pairs naturally with bergamot, grapefruit and lavender, with cedar, patchouli and oakmoss, with tobacco and leather, and with musks and iris. Because it is dry, it makes sweet notes read less sugary.

Perfumes with vetiver

• Ex Nihilo My Sweetest Morphine sets vetiver with musks and patchouli under mimosa, rose and a solar accord, after lilac, bergamot and an ozonic accord. Ex Nihilo files it as floral.
• Zoologist Cow places vetiver with cedarwood, benzoin, musks and amber below milk, lily of the valley, heliotrope, violet and jasmine, after sage and apple. Zoologist describes bucolic meadows and creamy apple milk.
• Sospiro Basso lists vetiver among sandalwood, celery seeds, pepper, galbanum, nutmeg, guaiac wood, oakmoss and cedar in a long base. Sospiro calls it woody.
• Amouage Honour Woman puts vetiver with frankincense, amber, opoponax and leather beneath a white floral heart of jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, lily of the valley and carnation. Amouage files it as white floral.
• Le Labo Bergamote 22 has no pyramid: Le Labo lists bergamot, petit grain, grapefruit, amber, musk and vetiver.

Choosing a vetiver perfume

Look for what vetiver is leaning on. With citrus, ginger or pepper it feels crisp and clean. With cedar and patchouli it is dry and woody. With leather, incense or tobacco it turns smoky and serious. Under florals, it works as a quiet earthy anchor, which is a good option if you want something floral that does not feel sweet. If you like clean dryness in a base, vetiver is the most reliable note to look for.
