Fruity perfumes

Fruit that is built, not pressed

Citrus peel can be pressed into oil, but most fruits give no usable extract. Peach, pineapple, strawberry, melon, apple and passion fruit are therefore built by perfumers from aroma molecules, and pyramids often write them as accords. Fruit usually appears in the top and heart, where it brings juice, brightness and a sweet-tart contrast. In a fruity perfume it leads the composition instead of just decorating it.

Five kinds of fruity

• Tropical: pineapple, mango, coconut and passion fruit.
• Orchard: apple, pear, peach and plum.
• Berry and cassis: tart, jammy, often with rose.
• Fresh fruity: citrus, ginger and green notes keeping the fruit sparkling.
• Fruity floral and gourmand: fruit over flowers, vanilla or praline.

Fruity perfumes in the collection

• Byredo Pulp is filed by Byredo as fruity: bergamot, blackcurrant and cardamom open, fig, red apple and tiare form the heart, and cedarwood, peach flower and praline close.
• Pernoire Anelo is fruity and fresh according to Pernoire: freshly sliced pineapple, pomelo and mandarin, then mango, ginger and magnolia, then dry amber, vetiver and patchouli.
• Tiziana Terenzi Kirkè opens with a crowd of passion fruit, peaches, raspberries, cassis, pears and warm sand, with lily of the valley in the heart and heliotrope, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli and musk below. See Tiziana Terenzi.
• Xerjoff Erba Gold pairs Amalfi lemon, Brazilian orange, bergamot and ginger with cloves, green apple, cardamom, melon and pear, then amber, Madagascar vanilla, musk and woody notes. Xerjoff files it as fresh and fruity.

Choosing your fruity perfume

Look for balance. Fruit with ginger, cardamom, pepper or vetiver stays dry and elegant. Fruit with coconut and tiare is summery and relaxed. Fruit over amber, woods or oud feels grown-up and has more presence in the evening. If you worry about sweetness, avoid pyramids with praline, vanilla and caramel together and favour citrus, green notes and woods. The brighter the top, the more daytime-friendly the scent.
