Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP vs Extrait: What Changes

Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP vs Extrait, compared from the house facts alone: the key ingredients of each version, the sizes we list and how to choose by taste.

Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP vs Extrait is not a choice between two perfumes but between two concentrations of one. The Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum and the Extrait both come from the collaboration between Maison Francis Kurkdjian and the crystal maker Baccarat, and the house gives each its own list of key ingredients. This article sets the two lists, the house's wording and our size and label data side by side, and it stays with what the house says.

Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP vs Extrait: the short answer

The Eau de Parfum, which we list in 200 ml, names three key ingredients: Hedione, Ambroxan and saffron. The Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum, which we list in 70 ml, names four: Cashmeran, Ambroxan, Grandiflorum jasmine and saffron. In the house's words the extrait is a more intense version of the same three auras, so the idea stays the same while the list and the concentration change.

Difference between Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum and Extrait de Parfum, list by list

  • On both lists: Ambroxan and saffron.
  • Only on the Eau de Parfum list: Hedione.
  • Only on the Extrait list: Cashmeran and Grandiflorum jasmine.

Neither is a pyramid, because the house publishes no top, heart and base notes for either version. The house text fills in part of what the lists leave out. For the Eau de Parfum it describes three auras: air, with jasmine and saffron; a mineral one from an ambergris-like, dry woody accord; and fire, a gourmand ethyl maltol note. Jasmine therefore appears in the story of both versions, but only the extrait puts a jasmine on its list.

What stays the same between the two

The idea behind both versions is the same: a perfume built on three auras, air, a mineral accord and fire, made with Baccarat to capture the transparency and density of crystal. Ambroxan and saffron run through both lists, jasmine appears in both stories, and both carry the woody, amber and floral labels. That shared plan is why the extrait reads as a variation on the Eau de Parfum and not as a new perfume, even though the lists are not identical.

What the house says the extrait intensifies

The house presents the extrait as an intensified take on those three auras, without changing the idea of crystal-making alchemy. It adds three details. Grandiflorum jasmine sits at its heart, ethyl maltol and a touch of bitter almond supply the gourmand fire, and an ambergris accord softens into a woody, ambery, musky base. The extrait bottle is dressed in a red that the house means to recall Baccarat red.

That is the full extent of what the house claims about the difference. It gives no figure for strength and no statement about how long either version lasts, so we make no claim about that either. In general a higher concentration usually makes a perfume denser and closer to the skin, and our guide to perfume concentrations explains what the words on the box mean and why a different concentration can also mean a different list.

Sizes, intensity and season labels of both versions side by side

  • Concentration and size: Eau de Parfum in 200 ml, Extrait de Parfum in 70 ml.
  • Intensity: strong for both in our labels.
  • Occasions and seasons: evenings and special occasions, autumn and winter, for both.
  • Scent labels: woody, amber and floral for both; the extrait adds gourmand.
  • Audience label: unisex for both.

The labels match almost entirely, which is why the choice comes down to the lists and the size rather than to season or occasion. The house gives no launch year for either version, so we give none. Both belong to the Maison Francis Kurkdjian collection, and the Extrait de Parfum collection and the Eau de Parfum collection sort them by concentration.

Eau de Parfum or Extrait: which to start with, by taste

Start with the Eau de Parfum if three named ingredients appeal to you and you want the original list in the larger bottle. It is also the version with the plainer gourmand note, since the house names ethyl maltol alone for it, without almond. Start with the extrait if Grandiflorum jasmine and a gourmand edge with bitter almond sound right, and if you prefer a more concentrated perfume in a smaller bottle. Both carry the strong label, so a light hand and a cool evening suit either one. This is not a ranking: it comes down to which list and which size you like better.

Oud Satin Mood Eau de Parfum (200 ml) also exists as an extrait, just as Baccarat Rouge 540 does, and the same logic applies: each concentration has its own list. The Eau de Parfum names violet, oud, Damascena rose, a vanilla amber accord and benzoin, and it shares the woody, amber and floral labels with both versions of Baccarat Rouge 540.

Grand Soir Eau de Parfum (35 ml) is listed in one concentration only, which makes it a useful contrast. Its key ingredients are cinnamon tree, a vanilla amber accord, ciste labdanum and lavender, and its amber and woody labels also appear on Baccarat Rouge 540. Everything about the Baccarat Rouge 540 list itself is in our Baccarat Rouge 540 notes explained, and the explore page holds further routes by note, family and house.

Frequently asked questions

Baccarat Rouge 540 extrait vs EDP: which is stronger?

The house calls the extrait a more intense version of the three auras of the Eau de Parfum. It gives no figures for strength or lasting power, so beyond that we make no claim.

What is the difference between Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum and Extrait de Parfum?

The Eau de Parfum lists Hedione, Ambroxan and saffron in 200 ml. The Extrait lists Cashmeran, Ambroxan, Grandiflorum jasmine and saffron in 70 ml and is presented as the more intense version.

Do Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP and Extrait have the same notes?

Not quite. Ambroxan and saffron appear on both lists. Hedione is only on the Eau de Parfum list, and Cashmeran and Grandiflorum jasmine are only on the extrait list. The house publishes no pyramid for either.
