Extrait vs Eau de Parfum: Perfume Concentrations Explained

Extrait de parfum, parfum, eau de parfum and eau de toilette describe how much perfume oil a bottle contains. This guide explains the usual ranges, why houses set their own scales and how to choose.

Every perfume is a blend of aromatic oil and a carrier, usually perfumer's alcohol with a little water. The concentration is the share of oil in that blend, and the name on the bottle tells you roughly where a perfume sits on the scale: eau de toilette, eau de parfum, extrait de parfum. It is one of the most useful pieces of information on a box, and one of the most misunderstood.

What concentration changes

A higher share of oil makes a perfume denser and richer. It usually sits closer to the skin, shows more of its base and leaves a deeper trace on fabric. A lower share makes it lighter and more open, with a fresher feel and a quicker fade. Neither is better in itself. A light concentration can be exactly right for a warm afternoon, and a rich one can be too much in the same setting. In practice a woody, resinous eau de parfum can feel richer than a citrus-led extrait, because the notes decide as much as the oil does.

Concentration is only one factor. The weight of the base notes matters just as much: resins, woods, vanilla and musks hold on longer than citrus or light florals at any concentration. We cover this in more detail in our guide to applying perfume and making it last.

The usual names and ranges

The table shows the ranges most often quoted. Treat them as a rough map, not a rulebook.

Name Share of perfume oil, as commonly quoted Typical character
Eau de Cologne about 2 to 5 percent Very light and short, a quick refresh
Eau de Toilette about 5 to 15 percent Light and open, easy to wear in warm weather
Eau de Parfum about 15 to 20 percent Fuller, with a clearer base
Parfum or Extrait de Parfum about 20 to 30 percent and more Dense and rich, worn in small amounts

Why the label is not the whole story

These names are trade conventions, not legal definitions, so each house draws its own lines and the ranges overlap. The research behind our collection shows this clearly.

Amouage publishes its own scale: eau de parfum at 15 to 35 percent perfume oil and extrait de parfum at 40 to 56 percent, with Guidance 46 dosed at 46 percent. Maison Crivelli states 30 to 32 percent for the extraits it lists and 15 to 20 percent for its eaux de parfum. Pernoire makes only extraits, in two lines: Anima at 25 percent and Odus at 30 percent. Zoologist labels its 60 ml bottles as extrait de parfum, with product pages that give 18 to 25 percent. Argos sells most of its perfumes as eau de parfum and gives its Triumph of Bacchus Extrait as 40 percent oil, while newer releases such as Neptune's Trident are extraits.

Put side by side, an eau de parfum at one house can contain more oil than an extrait at another. When a house states the percentage, that figure tells you more than the word on the box.

Some houses give the percentage on every product page, others never mention it. Where it is missing, use the name as a rough guide, then look at the base notes to judge how rich the perfume will feel.

Other names you will meet

  • Parfum and extrait de parfum. Two names for the top of the scale. Houses choose one or the other, and both usually mean the richest version they make.
  • Essence de parfum. A house name for a rich concentration. Amouage uses it for its Essences, which hold 30 percent perfume oil and are infused for six months with sandalwood chips and oak-aged bioethanol. Outlands is one of them.
  • Absolu de parfum. Another house name for a concentrated version. Byredo uses it for Bal d'Afrique Absolu.
  • Intense, elixir, fraîche. Marketing words with no fixed meaning. Read the notes and the stated concentration instead.

A different concentration can be a different perfume

It is tempting to think of an extrait as the same perfume with more oil in it. Sometimes the house rebuilds the formula instead. Ex Nihilo's Blue Talisman exists as an eau de parfum and as an extrait de parfum, and the recorded pyramids differ. The eau de parfum lists pear, bergamot, ginger and mandarin on top, orange blossom and Georgywood in the heart, and Ambrofix, Akigalawood and musks in the base. The extrait lists pear and bergamot on top, orange blossom and jasmine in the heart, and sandalwood, vanilla, musks, Ambrofix and ambery woods in the base.

The same holds for Bal d'Afrique, whose eau de parfum and absolu de parfum carry different notes. If a perfume you like exists in two concentrations, treat them as two perfumes and compare the notes before assuming one is a stronger copy of the other.

How to choose a concentration

  • Warm days and daytime. An eau de toilette or a lighter eau de parfum stays pleasant when heat already amplifies scent.
  • Cool weather and evenings. An eau de parfum or extrait gives the base notes room, and they carry well in colder air.
  • Small amounts. An extrait needs fewer sprays than an eau de toilette. Start low and add one spray at a time.
  • Your own skin. Wear a sample for a full day before you decide. The base appears on your skin, not on a paper strip.

Frequently asked questions

Is extrait de parfum stronger than eau de parfum?

It usually contains more perfume oil, so it is denser and richer and often stays closer to the skin. How far a scent projects also depends on its notes, so a rich extrait is not automatically louder.

Is a higher concentration always better?

No. A higher concentration is richer, not better. A lighter concentration can suit warm weather or daytime far better, and many wearers keep both in their collection.

What is the difference between parfum and extrait de parfum?

Both names sit at the top of the scale and houses use either one. Compare the stated percentage of perfume oil, when it is given, rather than the name.
