Bright spices and warm spices: what each does to a base

Spices fall into two rough camps. Bright or dry spices, pepper, cardamom and ginger, add lift and a clean edge: they cut through sweetness and make a base feel drier and more open. Warm spices, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, add heat and roundness: they thicken a base of vanilla, amber or balsam and make it feel cosier. Cumin is warm as well, but earthier. These are common descriptions, not rules, and the notes around a spice can turn it in another direction.

Bright and dry: pepper, cardamom and ginger

Cardamom and ginger also have note collections of their own: cardamom and ginger. Here, together with pepper, they work as lift.

Reinvented Pheromones leans on pink pepper and cardamom. Bergamot, saffron and pink pepper open it, a heart of cardamom, jasmine, rose, orris and elemi follows, and the base combines vanilla beans, cistus labdanum, vetiver, cypriol, sandalwood and musk. Ginger sits in the top with Amalfi lemon, Brazilian orange and Calabrian bergamot, and the heart pairs Guatemalan cardamom and cloves with green apple, melon and pear. Goldfield & Banks Ingenious Ginger builds the whole perfume around ginger. Bergamot, mandarin and ginger open it, magnolia forms the heart, and vanilla, amber and sandalwood form the base. The house names an Australian ginger flower accord, the native Red Back Ginger of tropical Queensland, as its hero material and describes a floral amber, so the ginger sits in a soft, warm frame instead of a sharp one. Warm and round: cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and cumin

Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Full-House carries cinnamon in the heart. Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange and Sicilian citron open it, Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger and Ceylon cinnamon form the heart, and the base holds Chinese black tea, guaiac wood, olibanum and ambroxan. Citrus keeps the cinnamon bright, and olibanum and guaiac wood add a smoky depth below it. It exists as a Parfum in 100 ml, with a 200 ml size as well, and is tagged strong, with spring, summer and autumn among its seasons.

Frederic Malle Promise pairs pink pepper in the top with clove oil in the heart, beside Bulgarian rose oil and Turkish rose absolute. Rosemary oil and an apple accord complete the top, and the base is patchouli heart, ambroxan, labdanum and cypriol heart. It belongs to the house's Desert Gems collection, a tribute to Middle Eastern perfumery, in which Dominique Ropion recreates the allure of oud as an illusion; no oud is listed among the notes. Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace lets clove carry the story. Pink pepper essence, orange flower absolute and clove oil open it, chestnut accord, gaïac wood oil and cade oil form the heart, and the base is vanilla accord, Peru balsam resinoid and cashmeran. The house pictures a winter evening indoors with a wood fire crackling while snow falls outside, and uses clove, gaïac wood, cade and cashmeran for the smoky, burning-wood effect. It is an Eau de Toilette in 100 ml, tagged moderate, for autumn and winter.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Silver rests on a flat list of six ingredients: nutmeg, vanilla, juniper berries, amber woods, coriander seeds and musks. The house publishes no tiers, so we add none. It is one half of a pair of eaux de parfum made from the same six ingredients but dosed into two silhouettes; in Silver, nutmeg and amber woods dominate, with juniper as a very fresh start and dry, balmy spice underneath. Le Labo Rose 31 brings cumin into a rose. The house lists Centifolia rose, cumin, olibanum, cedar, amber, gaïac wood, cistus and musk as one flat list, so we give no tiers. Its stated aim is to turn the famous Grasse rose into an assertive scent that anyone can wear, pairing it with warm, spicy and woody notes. Cumin supplies the earthy warmth.
