What Does Neroli Smell Like? Neroli in Perfume Explained

Neroli is the honeyed, slightly bitter scent of the bitter orange blossom. Here is how it smells, where it sits in a perfume and how seven perfumes from our range use it.

People who type “what does neroli smell like” usually want one clear picture, and neroli supplies it. This is the scent of the bitter orange blossom, commonly described as fresh and floral, with a honeyed warmth, a green edge and a faint bitterness. The guide below covers how the note smells, how it differs from orange blossom, where it sits in a perfume and what it is paired with. Seven perfumes from our range then show it at work.

What does neroli smell like: the short answer

Think of a white flower with the heaviness taken out. Neroli is usually bright without being sharp, sweet without being heavy and floral without the creaminess of the richer white flowers. A honeyed note tends to come first, then a green, slightly bitter edge that keeps the whole thing clean. That edge explains why neroli fits fresh perfumes as comfortably as floral and warm ones.

Next to citrus, neroli feels crisp. Beside jasmine and soft musks it turns round. Over vanilla, patchouli or wood it lifts a warm base. The seven perfumes below show all three.

Neroli and orange blossom: one tree, two words

Both words lead back to the bitter orange tree. In perfumery, neroli commonly names the oil taken from its blossom, while orange blossom is usually the flower scent more broadly, often as an absolute, and houses do not always draw the line in the same place. We therefore keep each house’s own word. Of the seven perfumes here, three list neroli, five list orange blossom or orange flower, and one lists both as separate notes.

Where neroli sits in a perfume

Neroli commonly appears at the top or in the heart, because it is bright and fairly light. In our seven it is at the top once and in the heart twice. Orange blossom or orange flower sits in the heart of three perfumes, in the base of one and in the flat list of one that has no tiers. Readers new to top, heart and base can start with our guide to how to read a fragrance pyramid, and the perfume glossary explains other terms.

What goes well with neroli

Neroli is easy to pair, which is part of why houses reach for it so often. Four partnerships recur in the seven perfumes.

  • Citrus and fruit. Bergamot, lime, pear, pineapple and mango keep neroli bright and juicy.
  • Other flowers. Jasmine, freesia, violet and iris give the blossom company.
  • Spice and tea. Cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and black tea add a dry, warm frame.
  • Warm bases. Patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla, sandalwood, white musks and ambroxan soften the finish.

How our perfumes use neroli

Neroli at the top and in the heart

Juliette Has a Gun Mmmm... is the plainest case, because the house pyramid has only three notes: neroli essence at the top, orange blossom absolute in the heart and patchouli essence in the base. The house’s recipe text adds caramel, raspberry, jasmine sambac, iris and sandalwood and calls the result a floral gourmand. We list an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged strong, for evenings in autumn and winter.

BORNTOSTANDOUT Dirty Heaven keeps neroli in the heart beside jasmine, under a top of bergamot. The base is long: tonka bean, saffron, ambroxan, vanilla, white musks, grey amber and modern woods. The house describes it as ethereal, with a flicker of something forbidden. It is an Eau de Parfum in 50 ml, tagged moderate, for spring, summer and autumn.

Al Ambra Ravenna names Tunisian neroli in the heart, with ginger and cinnamon, under a top of lemon, bergamot, orange, pineapple and mango. Black tea, guaiac wood, rosemary and ambroxan form the base. The house sums it up as clean yet grounded. We list an Extrait de Parfum in 50 ml, tagged moderate, for daily wear in spring and summer.

Orange blossom in the heart

Les Eaux Primordiales Elevation sets orange flower in the heart with cinnamon and freesia, under pear, hazelnut and cardamom. Vanilla, guaiac wood, ambroxan, sesame and white musks close it. The house calls the effect cottony and almost milky, so the blossom is soft rather than sharp. It is an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged moderate, for autumn and winter.

Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman pairs orange blossom with jasmine in the heart, under pear and bergamot and over sandalwood, vanilla, musks, Ambrofix™ and ambery woods. The house describes a warm, rounded, sunlit heart. We list the Extrait de Parfum in 50 ml, tagged strong, for evenings in autumn and winter, and the same perfume also comes as an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml.

Orange blossom in the base and in a flat list

Pernoire Amoral is the surprise. The house lists orange blossom in the base, with ambery notes, sandalwood and tonka, below a heart of violet, iris, oud and cypriol. Key lime, black tea, spices and smoked prunes open it. It belongs to the house’s Anima line and is an Extrait de Parfum in 50 ml, tagged strong, for autumn and winter.

Diptyque Eau des Sens has no pyramid. The house gives a flat list of orange blossom, angelica root, patchouli and juniper berry, so we keep it flat. Its idea is the whole bitter orange tree, the bigarade, with branches, leaves and fruit in one scent. We list an Eau de Toilette in 100 ml, tagged moderate, for daily and work wear in spring and summer.

Which neroli perfume to try first

Start from what you want around the blossom. Mmmm... puts neroli first in a gourmand, Dirty Heaven pairs it with jasmine and a musky amber finish, and Ravenna sets it among citrus, fruit and spice. Elevation keeps the blossom soft, Blue Talisman sunlit and Amoral dark and smoky. Eau des Sens is the one to try for the bitter orange tree itself.

Concentration changes the picture too. As a rule an extrait carries more perfume oil than an eau de parfum, so the same blossom usually feels fuller and sits closer to the skin. Three of the seven are extraits, three are eaux de parfum and one is an eau de toilette, and you can browse them in the Extrait de Parfum collection and the Eau de Parfum collection.

The neroli perfumes collection gathers every perfume with this note, and the floral perfumes show the wider family. For something light for the warmer months, our spring perfume selection is a good next read.
