Niche Perfumes for Men: What the Houses Label That Way

Most niche perfume carries no gender label. This overview shows which perfumes the houses themselves present for men, how they do it, and what nine of those scents have in common.

Walk through a niche perfumery and you will notice how few bottles say who they are for. Most houses publish a perfume with its notes and its story and leave the rest to the wearer. A small group of perfumes is the exception, and this article is about that group.

At the time of writing, sixteen of the roughly 350 perfumes in our range carry a men label. Eighteen carry a women label, and more than three hundred carry none. For all sixteen the label is the house's own; we did not add any. Below we show nine of them, from all seven houses that use the label. It is an overview, not a ranking, and the full set is in the niche perfumes for men collection.

How a perfume gets the label

The houses in our range do it in three ways.

  • In the name. Amouage adds Man, Roja Parfums adds Pour Homme and Maison Francis Kurkdjian adds Homme.
  • In the catalogue. Penhaligon's files a perfume under its fragrances for him, and Frederic Malle keeps a separate page of perfumes for men.
  • In the description. Fragrance Du Bois calls Lucius its first fragrance aimed at men, and Jo Malone London presents Cypress & Grapevine as a scent for men.

In each case the label says how a house presents a perfume. It says nothing about what is in the bottle, as the note lists below show.

Nine perfumes the houses label for men

Woody and aromatic

Amouage Reflection Man is an eau de parfum that the house files under fougère and amber. Rosemary, red pepper berries and bitter orange leaves open it, neroli, orris, jasmine and ylang-ylang form the heart, and vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood make the base.

Frederic Malle French Lover appears only on the page that the house devotes to perfumes for men. The house gives a top of pimiento, angelica and juniper and a base of patchouli, vetiver and frankincense, with no heart listed, and describes this eau de parfum as spicy and aromatic.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Amyris Homme exists in two concentrations, and both are in our range. The eau de toilette lists mandarin, rosemary, saffron, amyris, cedar, tonka bean and iris as key ingredients, without a pyramid. The house describes it as fresh and woody at once.

The Amyris Homme extrait de parfum keeps mandarin, saffron, amyris, tonka bean and iris and adds vanilla and cinnamon, while rosemary and cedar leave the list. The house calls this version a woody amber perfume. It is a reminder that a different concentration is often a different composition.

Fresh

Penhaligon's Endymion is an eau de cologne, the lightest concentration in this article. The house names bergamot, lavandin, suede, a coffee accord, geranium and cedarwood as one flat list.

Fragrance Du Bois Lucius is a parfum that the house describes as fresh and woody. Bergamot, mandarin and pink pepper open it, cedarwood and orange flower follow, and tonka, vetiver and dry amber form the base.

Jo Malone London Cypress & Grapevine is a cologne intense for which the house names one note per level: cypress on top, grapevine in the heart and amber in the base. The house calls the scent refined, distinctive and bold.

Dense and resinous

Amouage Jubilation XXV Man has the longest pyramid of the nine. Labdanum, coriander, orange, davana, frankincense and blackberry open it. Honey, bay, cinnamon, orchid, rose and clove are among the heart notes, and the base includes patchouli, opoponax, myrrh, Atlas cedarwood, musk, oud wood and immortelle. Amouage files this eau de parfum under woody.

Roja Parfums Enigma Pour Homme is a parfum with bergamot on top and a floral heart of geranium, rose de mai, neroli, jasmin de Grasse and heliotrope. The base is where it turns warm: cardamom, ginger, pepper, patchouli, cognac, tobacco, sandalwood, benzoin, vanilla and ambergris. Roja pictures a stranger at the bar of a private members' club.

What the nine have in common

Read the nine lists side by side and a pattern shows. Herbs such as rosemary and lavandin, woods such as cedarwood, vetiver and sandalwood, and spices and resins return again and again. Sweet fruit is rare.

Flowers, on the other hand, are everywhere: neroli, orris, jasmine and ylang-ylang in Reflection Man, rose and orchid in Jubilation XXV Man, rose de mai and heliotrope in Enigma Pour Homme. The label points to a way of presenting a perfume, not to a set of notes reserved for one group of people.

The concentrations run the whole scale as well, from an eau de cologne and an eau de toilette to two parfums and an extrait. A men label tells you nothing about strength.

How to choose

If the label is your starting point, the sixteen perfumes are one click away. If the notes are your starting point, you have far more to choose from. Most of our range is unlabelled and sits in the unisex collection, and the woody perfumes are a natural next step from the nine above.

Pick two or three note lists you like and compare their bases, because the base decides how a perfume settles on your skin. Our guide on choosing a niche perfume without smelling it first shows how to do that, and what niche perfume is explains why many houses assign no gender at all. Every house we carry is listed on the brands page.

Frequently asked questions

How many niche perfumes are made specifically for men?

In our range, 16 of about 350 perfumes carry a men label, each time from the house itself. Most niche houses publish their perfumes without a label, which is why the unisex collection is by far the largest.

What do Homme, Pour Homme and Man on a bottle mean?

They are how a house shows that it presents a perfume to men. Amouage uses Man, Roja Parfums Pour Homme and Maison Francis Kurkdjian Homme. The word describes positioning, not ingredients.

Can anyone wear a perfume labelled for men?

Yes. The label is a suggestion from the house. Notes such as vetiver, rosemary, iris or tobacco belong to nobody, so choose by the note list and by how the perfume feels on your own skin.
