Niche Perfumes for Women: Who Decides, and Nine Examples
Only a small part of niche perfumery is labelled for women, and not always by the house itself. This overview shows where the label comes from and what nine labelled perfumes, from rose to caramel and oud, have in common.
Search for niche perfume for women and you get lists of flowers. The shelf itself tells a different story: in niche perfumery most bottles carry no gender at all, and the few that do are more varied than the word suggests.
At the time of writing, eighteen of the roughly 350 perfumes in our range carry a women label. For eleven of them the label is the house's own. For the other seven, four by Juliette Has a Gun and one each by Jo Malone London, Diptyque and Ex Nihilo, the house states no gender on its page and the label follows the listings in the large perfume databases. We mention it because the two are not the same thing.
This article shows nine of the eighteen, from seven houses. It is a survey of what carries the label, not a ranking, and you will find all of them in the niche perfumes for women collection.
Where the label comes from
- The name. Amouage adds Woman to the name, as in Honour Woman.
- The catalogue. Frederic Malle keeps a page of perfumes for women, and Penhaligon's files a perfume under its fragrances for her.
- The description. Argos gives Pallas Athene a gender on its own page, Fragrance Du Bois calls Sirène the first perfume it made with a woman in mind, and Al Ambra puts the word Women in the title of Vanilla Night & Day.
- Other people. Where a house says nothing, databases and shops often add a label of their own. That is a reading of the scent, not a statement by its maker.
Seen this way, a women label is a piece of presentation with four possible authors. It is worth knowing which one you are reading.
Nine perfumes that carry the label
Rose and iris
Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady is an eau de parfum with rose on top, blackcurrant, raspberry and clove in the heart, and patchouli, sandalwood and frankincense in the base. The house presents it as a new take on the chypre family.

Frederic Malle Iris Poudre is softer. Rose, violet and ylang-ylang open this eau de parfum, iris is the only heart note, and sandalwood, musk and tonka bean form the base. The house files it as a floral aldehyde.
White flowers and bright bouquets
Amouage Honour Woman is an eau de parfum that the house calls a white floral. Black pepper, rhubarb leaves and coriander open it, jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, lily of the valley and carnation fill the heart, and vetiver, frankincense, amber, opoponax and leather close it.

Argos Pallas Athene takes its name from a painting by Gustav Klimt. Bergamot, grapefruit, pink peppercorn and red berry open this eau de parfum, peony, hyacinth, violet and rose petals form the heart, and iris, Mysore sandalwood, amber, vetiver, patchouli and vanilla make the base.

Penhaligon's Luna is the lightest of the nine, an eau de toilette for which the house names orange, bergamot, a jasmine accord, rose and fir balsam as one flat list.

Sweet, spiced and dark
Penhaligon's Changing Constance has no flower in its pyramid. Cardamom and pimento are on top of this eau de parfum, a salted caramel accord is the heart and a tobacco accord is the base.

Al Ambra Vanilla Night & Day is an extrait de parfum that goes all the way to dessert: red fruits and vanilla on top, caramel, honey and powdery notes in the heart, and vanilla, sugar and musk in the base.

Fragrance Du Bois Sirène is a parfum that opens with cherry and pink pepper, moves through oud, incense and a lactonic note, and ends on moss, benzoin, cistus, labdanum and cypriol.

Fruit and musk
Juliette Has a Gun Pear Inc. is one of the seven with a borrowed label. The house lists three notes for this eau de parfum, green pear, ambroxan and musks, and names no gender on its page.

What the nine show
Put the lists next to each other and the idea of a single style for women falls apart. There is a rose with clove and frankincense, a white floral that ends in leather, a caramel and tobacco perfume without one flower, and a cherry over oud and moss. Four of the nine list no rose, jasmine or iris at all. The concentrations differ just as much: one eau de toilette, six eaux de parfum, one parfum and one extrait.
The materials are not reserved either. Vetiver, frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood and leather sit in the bases here, and you will meet the same notes among the perfumes that houses present to men. The label describes how a perfume is presented. The note list describes the perfume.
How to choose
Start from a flower or a mood, not from the label. If you like flowers, our floral perfumes and the rose collection are far larger than the eighteen labelled perfumes, because most of them come without a gender. The unisex collection holds more than three hundred perfumes.
Then look at the base and the concentration. A flower over musk and light woods stays airy, the same flower over patchouli, resins or leather becomes deep and dark, and an eau de toilette asks for less room than a parfum. Our guide to fragrance families helps you place a note you do not know, and how to read a fragrance pyramid explains top, heart and base. Read two or three product pages before you decide, because the pyramid is printed on each. All houses are on the brands page.
Frequently asked questions
Are niche perfumes for women always floral?
No. Among the perfumes that carry the label in our range are a caramel and tobacco scent, a cherry and oud perfume and a pear and musk one. Flowers are common, but they are not a rule.
Who decides that a perfume is for women?
Sometimes the house, through the name, its catalogue or its description. Often nobody at the house does, and a database or shop adds the label later. In our range 11 of 18 women labels come from the house itself.
Can men wear a perfume labelled for women?
Yes. A label is the maker's suggestion, or somebody else's guess. Nothing in the bottle changes with it, so go by the notes and by how the perfume sits on your own skin.
