Nishane Ani Notes: Scent, Structure and Who It Suits

A tier-by-tier reading of the Nishane Ani notes, the idea behind the perfume, who it suits and the perfumes of the same house that share some of its notes.

Nishane Ani Extrait de Parfum 100 ml bottle

The Nishane Ani notes start cool and spiced and end warm and soft. Nishane Ani is an Extrait de Parfum with bergamot, green notes, blue ginger and pink pepper on top, blackcurrant, Turkish rose and cardamom in the heart, and a base of patchouli, cedarwood, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, musk and sandalwood. The house tells it as a calm, romantic perfume. This article explains the story behind it, reads the three tiers, and says who it suits and which other Nishane perfumes share some of its notes.

The idea behind Ani: a folk song and a ruined city

Nishane draws on two sources for Ani. One is the Anatolian folk song Sarı Gelin, the other is the ancient city of Ani, now a ruin on the UNESCO World Heritage list, which gives the perfume its name. The idea, in the words of the house, is to dissolve borders between people and to encourage the wearer to build an empire of their own from the ruins. Ani sits in the house collection called No Boundaries, which fits that message. The house also puts Turkish rose at the heart of the perfume and a base of vanilla, benzoin and ambergris beneath it.

Nishane Ani notes, tier by tier

The top tier has four notes: bergamot, green notes, blue ginger and pink pepper. Bergamot gives a clean citrus lift, the green notes add a cool, leafy freshness, and blue ginger and pink pepper bring a dry, peppery warmth. The opening is spiced and green rather than sweet.

The heart is blackcurrant, Turkish rose and cardamom. Blackcurrant adds a dark, slightly tart fruit, Turkish rose is the floral centre that the house names itself, and cardamom keeps a cool line of spice running through. Rose and spice together stop the vanilla below from coming across as plain sweetness. More perfumes with this floral heart are collected under rose perfumes.

The base is the longest tier, with seven notes: patchouli, cedarwood, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, musk and sandalwood. Vanilla and benzoin are the sweet, balsamic part. Patchouli and cedarwood bring earthy and dry wood, sandalwood a smoother, creamier wood, and musk a soft finish close to the skin. Ambergris is commonly used for warmth and depth. A base this full carries most of the weight of the perfume, and you can follow the same thread through our vanilla perfumes.

How Ani moves on skin

At first the spice and the green notes lead: bergamot, blue ginger and pink pepper are brisk, and cardamom and blackcurrant follow close behind. Then the rose settles in and the base begins to speak. As the green and spicy notes fade, the vanilla becomes easier to notice and the woods and musk wrap around it. It is worth waiting a few minutes before passing judgement, because the opening shows only the cooler half of the story. An extrait is dense, and Ani stays warm and close to the skin instead of turning airy.

Nishane Ani scent: spiced vanilla that stays calm

Our family label for Ani is Spicy / Woody / Vanilla, and we tag the scent spicy, woody and oriental. On intensity we tag it strong. If you are after a Nishane Ani review, this is a close reading of the recorded notes and of our own tags, not a hands-on test. In plain words, Ani is a vanilla perfume with a lot going on around the vanilla. Spice, rose, fruit and wood keep the sweetness in check, which is why the house can call it calm instead of sugary.

Who Nishane Ani suits, and when

The house states no gender for Ani and we list it as unisex. We tag it for evenings and special occasions, and for autumn and winter, not for spring or summer. It suits people who like vanilla when spice, rose and wood cut through it, and who prefer warm, quiet scents to loud ones. If you want a citrus-led perfume for the daytime in warm weather, the X version below is the closer fit.

Extrait de Parfum, 100 ml and the X version

We list Ani as an Extrait de Parfum in 100 ml, and the catalogue holds no other concentration or size of this perfume. What an extrait is, and how it differs from an eau de parfum, is covered in our explainer on concentrations. Ani X is a different perfume and not another concentration: it belongs to the X Collection, which reworks earlier perfumes of the house. The house describes it as a refreshed Ani that opens with a richer burst of juicy citrus than the original while keeping the vanilla. Lemon, watery notes and honeydew melon join the top, and the heart adds lavender, sage and green apple. We tag it moderate where Ani is strong. For a close comparison, read Nishane Ani vs Ani X.

Other Nishane perfumes that share notes with Ani

Nefs shares rose, vanilla and cedarwood with Ani, but it is a different kind of warmth. The house calls it its flagship oriental, a modern, East-meets-West take on the genre, with honey, saffron and fig on top, rose and osmanthus in the heart, and amber, oud, leather and whiskey in a long base. We tag it strong, for evenings, autumn and winter, and we list it in 50 ml.

Hacivat shares bergamot, patchouli and cedarwood with Ani and goes in another direction. Pineapple, grapefruit, jasmine, oakmoss and dry woods make it a fresh, mossy chypre that we tag for daily wear, work and the months from spring to autumn.

What is the difference between Nishane Ani and Ani X?

Ani X is a separate perfume from the X Collection. It opens with more citrus, adds melon, lavender, sage and green apple, and keeps the vanilla. We tag it moderate and Ani strong.

Is Nishane Ani a winter perfume?

We tag Ani for autumn and winter and for evenings and special occasions. With a base of vanilla, benzoin and ambergris it is warm, so we do not tag it for spring or summer.
