Woody Perfume: Cedar, Sandalwood and Beyond in Niche
Eight niche woody perfumes, one for each wood from cedar and vetiver to birch and amyris. Notes, how dry, creamy and smoky woods differ, and who each one suits.
A woody perfume is built around one or more woods, and the word covers a lot of ground. Cedar is commonly dry, sandalwood creamy, vetiver earthy, and birch or guaiac smoky. This selection takes eight niche perfumes, one for each wood, and shows how each house frames it.
How we chose these woody perfumes
Every perfume here carries the scent tag woody in our texts. From that group we took one for each wood the houses name: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, guaiac, birch, cypress, amyris and cashmere wood. We kept one perfume per house and used each perfume once, so the order is not a ranking and no house appears twice. The notes are the houses’ own, and where a house gives no tiers we keep its list flat. The whole family is in our woody scent collection.
Dry, creamy and smoky: what woody means
Woody perfumes fall into three broad moods. Dry woods such as cedar and vetiver are commonly crisp and slightly earthy, and they keep a perfume composed. Creamy woods such as sandalwood are soft and round, and our sandalwood guide explains that note in depth. Smoky woods such as birch and guaiac bring a darker edge. Many perfumes mix two of the three. For where woody sits among the other scent families, see our guide to fragrance families.
Woody perfume by wood: eight niche choices
Cedar and vetiver
Ex Nihilo The Hedonist puts cedar and vetiver in one frame. Bergamot and ginger open it, cedarwood and Akigalawood form the heart, and vetiver, musks and tonka bean the base. The house pictures wild, untamed nature, with black stones and forces of the earth, and names Haitian vetiver. We list it as an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml with a strong tag, for daily and evening wear in spring, autumn and winter.

Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Double Bonus saves vetiver for the very bottom: Java vetiver oil is the only base note listed. Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange and mandarin open it, with Tunisian neroli, Guatemalan cardamom, Indonesian nutmeg and two kinds of pepper in the heart. The wood is a single dry line under citrus and spice. Double Bonus is a Parfum in 100 ml, tagged strong, for daily, work and evening wear from spring to autumn.

Sandalwood and soft woods
Le Labo Santal 33 is the sandalwood here, with cedarwood beside it. The house gives one flat list: cardamom, iris, violet, Australian sandalwood and cedarwood. It describes a smoky wood accord with spicy, leathery and musky nuances, and Le Labo names Kimberley in Australia as the source of its sandalwood. We list it as an Eau de Parfum in 50 ml with a strong tag, for autumn and winter evenings.

Argos Birth of Venus stacks several woods in its base: vetiver, cedarwood, Mysore sandalwood and cashmere wood, with amber and labdanum. The house took Botticelli’s painting of Venus rising from the sea as its starting point, and the heart of narcissus, jasmine sambac and rose is sweetened with raspberry and a hint of chocolate. The woods frame a floral and fruity picture here. We list the Eau de Parfum in 100 ml with a moderate tag, for daily and special wear in spring and summer.

BORNTOSTANDOUT Drunk Lovers lists cypress in the heart, and Virginian cedarwood, West Indian sandalwood and vetiver in a long base. Citronella, bergamot, lemon, Juniperus mexicana, grapefruit and red berries open it, and brandy, pepper, ginger and clary sage form the heart. The house tells it as a heated night with spilled brandy on dark wood. It is an Eau de Parfum in 50 ml with a strong tag, for evenings and special occasions in autumn and winter.

Smoky and green woods
Sospiro Basso is the long list of woods. Its base holds sandalwood, vetiver, guaiac wood and cedar with celery seeds, black and pink pepper, galbanum, nutmeg and oakmoss. Grapefruit opens it alone, and mayflower, carnation and labdanum form the heart. The house calls it deep, resonant and commanding, born in the hush before a performance. Basso is an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml with a strong tag, for evenings in autumn and winter.

Tiziana Terenzi Orion brings birch into the heart, with patchouli, jasmine and thyme, under a cool opening of bergamot, red currant, apple and pineapple. Incense, amber, oud, musk and cedar close it. The house describes a spicy, intense yet delicate perfume and ties it to sailing near Mount Conero. We list it as an Extrait de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged strong, for daily and evening wear in spring and autumn.

Amyris
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Amyris Homme is the one Eau de Toilette in the group. The house gives a flat list: mandarin, rosemary, saffron, amyris, cedar, tonka bean and iris, and describes a fresh and woody composition built on the pairing of amyris wood and iris. We tag it moderate, for daily and work wear from spring to autumn, and the same perfume also exists in our range as an Extrait de Parfum in 70 ml.

Woody perfume for men and for women
Six of the eight carry our unisex label. Amyris Homme carries a men’s label and Birth of Venus a women’s label, and these show how the perfumes are presented rather than who may wear them. The woods themselves are not gendered, so a woody perfume for men or a woody perfume for women is a question of taste, and the unisex perfumes are a good place to look first.
Where to start with a woody perfume
Start from the mood. For clean, dry woods begin with The Hedonist or Game of Spades Double Bonus, for creamy ones Santal 33 or Birth of Venus, and for smoke Basso, Orion or Drunk Lovers. Amyris Homme is the fresh, aromatic way in.
The second choice is concentration. Five of the eight are an Eau de Parfum, and the other three are a Parfum, an Extrait de Parfum and an Eau de Toilette. You can compare them in the Eau de Parfum collection, and the notes behind each wood are gathered in the cedar, vetiver and sandalwood collections. The explore page lets you search by note and family.
