Rum perfumes

Rum in perfume is an accord of sugar-cane sweetness, dried fruit, vanilla and a woody, slightly boozy warmth. It gives an opening a glow, or it sits in the base as a sweet backdrop for tobacco, vanilla and amber. The perfumes in our collection that list rum or rhum run from dark ambers to a tropical coconut build.

Rum as an accord, not a spirit

There is no distilled spirit in a perfume bottle. A rum note is usually an accord: perfumers combine a sugar-cane sweetness, dried fruit, a touch of vanilla and a woody, slightly boozy warmth until the whole reads as rum. Some houses write it with the French spelling, rhum, and a few add a qualifier such as white, dark or barricaded. The result is sweet, but the sweetness has depth and a hint of heat, which sets it apart from the plain sugar of caramel.

Quick to open, slow to settle

Rum likes the top of a pyramid. Many of the perfumes in our collection that list it place it there, where it gives the opening a boozy glow. Some put it in the heart and others keep it for the base, where it acts as a sweet backdrop for vanilla, amber and wood. Tobacco and vanilla are its usual companions here, followed by spice and dried or stone fruit.

Ways the houses use rum

  • Sospiro Il Padrino opens with dark rum and amaretto, beside blackcurrant and bergamot. Patchouli blossom, dry amber and sandalwood form the heart, and labdanum, vanilla wood and Siam benzoin the base. Sospiro files it as oriental.
  • Argos Triumph of Bacchus sets rum beside saffron, white peach and green apple in the top, over patchouli, jasmine, tonka bean and vetiver, with tobacco, amber, Mysore sandalwood, musk and vanilla underneath. Argos lists oriental, spicy, woody and gourmand.
  • Pernoire Otimo pairs rum with quince and cardamom, then moves to tobacco, praline, patchouli and tonka, and closes on cedarwood, vanilla and osmanthus. Pernoire calls it spicy and sweet.
  • Les Eaux Primordiales Mécanique Intuitive puts rum in the heart beside tobacco, between osmanthus and black tea above and tonka bean, vanilla and leather below. Les Eaux Primordiales describes it as warm and animalic: leather, rum, vanilla and tobacco.
  • Lorenzo Pazzaglia Summer Hammer is the one with tropical notes. Lorenzo Pazzaglia writes white rhum into a top of mango, pineapple, coconut and bergamot, followed by coconut milk, marine notes and white flowers, then vetiver, musk, sandalwood and Indian amber.
  • Lorenzo Pazzaglia Van Py Rhum lists rhum in the top among four vanillas and tonka bean, and barricaded rhum again in the base, with agarwood, Indonesian patchouli and black vanilla pod.

Reading a rum perfume

Decide first whether you want dry or sweet. Rum beside tobacco, leather and cedarwood turns dark and dry. Rum with vanilla, praline or honey becomes dessert. Rum with coconut and fruit moves to the beach. Then look at the tier. A rum in the top is a lively first impression that gives way to the heart, while a rum in the base is a slow, sweet warmth that stays under everything else. Heavy builds with tobacco and resin suit cold months and evenings.

Rum perfumes

Frequently asked

Does a rum perfume come across as alcoholic?

It carries a boozy warmth, but it is a sweet, rounded impression rather than a sharp one. The note is an accord of sugar, dried fruit, vanilla and wood, and the perfume around it decides how dry or how dessert-like it feels.

Why do some perfumes write rhum instead of rum?

Rhum is simply the French spelling. Lorenzo Pazzaglia uses it for white rhum, rhum and barricaded rhum, and for a rhum accord, while other houses in our collection write rum or dark rum.

Which notes pair with rum?

Tobacco, vanilla, cinnamon and cardamom are the usual partners in our collection, along with stone fruit such as peach or quince. Leather and cedarwood make it drier, while coconut and mango make it lighter and more tropical.
