Les Eaux Primordiales perfumes from France

Among the perfumes listed here are Couleur Primaire, a linen-clean mix of aldehydes, pear and white musks, Ambre Superfluide, a honeyed amber with cinnamon, tobacco and rum, and Ambre Supermassive, an extrait of black vanilla, saffron and tobacco.

A manufacture in northern France

Arnaud Poulain founded Les Eaux Primordiales in 2015 in the Hauts-de-France, near Arras. The name is borrowed from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, where the primordial waters are the first signs of life on Earth. From design with Amélie Bourgeois to bottling, everything happens at La Manufacture, on a wooded 14-hectare estate.

Ranges named after science

Superclassique reinvents 20th-century French classics, Supercritique, named after CO2 extraction, is the range of flowers, Superfluide works with spices, resins and precious woods, and Supermassive, drawing on cosmology and oceanography, is made only as perfume extracts. Finished compositions mature in stainless-steel vats in a darkened, climate-controlled room.

Where to start

Couleur Primaire is the clean one: aldehydes and pear over jasmine, peony, rose, white musks and ambroxan. Ambre Superfluide is its opposite, with honey, apple, cinnamon and fir balsam over amber, black vanilla, tobacco and rum. Mécanique Intuitive is dry and warm: osmanthus and black tea, tobacco and rum, then tonka bean, vanilla and leather.
