Woody perfumes

Wood is a structure, not a single smell

A woody perfume is defined by what holds it up. Sandalwood is creamy and soft, cedar dry and crisp, vetiver earthy and root-like, patchouli damp and dark. Guaiac wood and birch bring smoke, and oud adds resin. Many pyramids also name modern wood molecules, written as cashmere wood, Akigalawood or Georgywood, which perfumers use for clean, dry or velvety effects.

Where woods sit in a composition

Woods usually run from the heart into the base. They give a scent its backbone, slow down brighter materials above them and stop sweet notes from sagging. Citrus and spice on top make a woody scent feel fresh; leather, incense and resins make it dark; vanilla and tonka make it warm. That is why the same family can contain very different perfumes.

How to choose a woody perfume

Decide first which wood you enjoy. Cedar and vetiver give dry, upright scents. Sandalwood gives soft, creamy ones. Birch, guaiac and oud give smoke. Then look at the top: citrus and pepper keep things bright for daytime, while resins and leather point to the evening. A longer base usually means a slower, more layered fade, and an extrait will sit denser on the skin than an eau de parfum.
