Floral Perfume: One Flower at a Time in Niche

Eight floral perfumes from our range, each led by one flower, from rose to peony. The guide shows how the list was made and where a reader might start.

Matière Première Radical Rose Eau de Parfum 100 ml bottle

A floral perfume is not one smell. Rose, jasmine, iris, tuberose, orange blossom, violet, lily of the valley and peony each smell different from the others, and a perfume built around one of them is a different thing from a mixed bouquet. This guide picks eight floral perfumes from our range, one lead flower each, so that you can follow the flower you like.

Floral perfume: how this selection was made

We started from perfumes that our own texts tag as floral and left out the gourmand ones. Then we gave each perfume one lead flower, from rose, jasmine, iris, tuberose, orange blossom, violet, lily of the valley and peony, and took one perfume for each flower and one for each house. Where several perfumes fit, we went by popularity in our range and avoided putting the same perfume into many guides. The lead flower is the one the house's list or description points to. Where the list holds several flowers, the paragraph says so.

Floral perfume for women, floral perfume for men

Floral is a scent family, not a gender. Searches such as “floral perfume for women” and “floral perfume for men” are really about the label on the product page. Seven of the eight perfumes below are listed as unisex, and one, the peony perfume at the end, is listed as a women's perfume.

Rose

Matière Première Radical Rose is the rose of the list. The house names five materials and no pyramid: rose centifolia absolute from France, saffron, pepper berries essence from Jamaica, patchouli essence from Indonesia and labdanum absolute from Andalusia. Saffron and pepper sharpen the rose, and patchouli and labdanum darken it. We list an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged strong, for autumn and winter evenings, and the house calls it genderless.

Jasmine

Les Eaux Primordiales Couleur Primaire is the jasmine, in a heart with peony and rose. Aldehydes and pear open it, and white musks and ambroxan close it. The house calls it its signature scent and builds it on the memory of linen drying outdoors, a clean, bright frame for a white flower. We list an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged moderate, fresh and musky, for work and daily wear in spring and summer. Our guide to jasmine in perfume explains the note itself.

Iris

Zoologist Moth gives iris a crowded heart: heliotrope, iris, jasmine, mimosa, muguet and rose. A spice opening of black pepper, cinnamon, clove, cumin, lemon, nutmeg and saffron comes first, and the base includes ambergris, honey, resins, guaiac wood, oud, patchouli, smoke and vetiver. The brand describes dusty, honeyed florals with spicy smoke. We list an Extrait de Parfum in 60 ml, tagged strong, for autumn and winter evenings.

Tuberose

Maison Crivelli Tubéreuse Astrale is the tuberose, written as a list of seven key raw materials instead of a pyramid. Tuberose absolute and osmanthus absolute stand with cinnamon bark essential oil, carrot seeds essential oil, cistus absolute, a leather accord and musks. The house sets powdery tuberose against velvety suede under the Milky Way. We list an Extrait de Parfum in 50 ml, tagged strong, floral and leather, for summer and autumn evenings.

Orange blossom

Essential Parfums Fig Infusion is the orange blossom, a white flower in a fruity, sunny frame. Fig, mandarin and clementine lead, freesia, orange blossom and Sri Lankan black tea form the heart, and Virginian cedarwood, sandalwood and benzoin the base. The house pictures a sunny day in the south of France and names Nathalie Lorson as its composer. We list an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged moderate, for spring and summer days and into autumn.

Violet

Byredo Bal d'Afrique is the violet, in a heart with cyclamen and jasmine petals. South African buchu, African marigold, bergamot and blackcurrant open it, and tonka bean absolute, cedarwood, musks and vetiver close it. The house presents it as a tribute to Africa's influence on dance, art and music. We list an Eau de Parfum in 50 ml, tagged moderate, floral and fruity, for spring to autumn.

Lily of the valley

Xerjoff Renaissance is the lily of the valley, in a heart that the house calls mostly floral, with mint and Bulgarian rose. Mandarin, lemon, Calabrian bergamot, bigarade and petitgrain open it, and musk, cedarwood, amber and patchouli close it. The house names it after the Renaissance and offers it as a celebration of Italian artistry. We list an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, tagged moderate, fresh and citrus, for spring and summer.

Peony

Jo Malone London Peony & Blush Suede is the peony and the simplest list of the eight: red apple at the top, peony in the heart, suede in the base. The house gives the peony delicate rose and honey accents and the suede a supple, warm texture. It is a Cologne in 100 ml, listed for women, tagged moderate, floral and fruity, for spring and summer.

How to choose a floral perfume

Start with the flower, then look at the weight around it. For light, daytime florals, the tags point to Couleur Primaire, Renaissance and Peony & Blush Suede. For fruit beside the flower, look at Fig Infusion and Bal d'Afrique. For darker, spicier florals with an evening mood, look at Radical Rose, Moth and Tubéreuse Astrale.

Concentration helps too. Five of the eight are eaux de parfum, two are extraits and one is a cologne, and you can browse them in the Eau de Parfum collection and the Extrait de Parfum collection. The full list is in our floral perfumes collection. To follow one flower further, open the rose, jasmine or iris collection, and for the families around floral, read our guide to fragrance families. The explore page offers other ways in.
