Green Perfume: Herbs, Leaves, Tea and Moss in Niche
Green perfume is made from herbs, leaves, tea, moss and roots instead of flowers or sugar. This guide sorts eight niche perfumes from our aromatic range by what is green in them.
Green perfume is the family of leaves, stems, herbs, tea, moss and roots. It brings to mind a garden or a forest floor rather than flowers or sugar. The idea is broad: a green note can be cool and sharp, soft and herbal, or dry and earthy, so two green perfumes can feel quite different.
This guide sorts eight perfumes from our range by what is green in them: herb, leaf, tea, moss or root. All eight come from our aromatic perfumes, and the next section explains how they were chosen. For the wider map of scent families, see our guide to fragrance families, and for more ways into the range, try our explore page.
How we chose the green perfumes
The selection follows four rules. The scent family has to be aromatic. The recorded notes have to name one of lavender, mint, sage, basil, tea, moss, vetiver or rosemary. Where our range allows it, the list covers each of those notes. And there is one perfume per house, so that no single house dominates the list. Read it as a selection, not a ranking.
What makes green perfume green
Green is less a single note than a character. Perfumers usually reach it by four routes, and several of the perfumes below combine two of them.
- Herbs. Lavender, mint, sage, basil and rosemary: aromatic, cool and clean.
- Leaves. Leaf and stem notes, from tomato leaf to bay leaf: sappy and slightly bitter.
- Tea and moss. Dry and leafy for tea, cool and damp for moss.
- Roots. Vetiver: earthy and dry, the green that goes underground. Our guide to vetiver in perfume covers it in depth, and the vetiver collection lists every perfume with the note.
Herbs and leaves
Mind Games Blockade is an extrait with tomato leaf, pink pepper, mango skin and bergamot Capua on top, lavender, mango flower, watery cyclamen and a spice note in the heart, and Cuir Velours DI, patchouli, Ambrostar and oud in the base. The green comes from the tomato leaf and the lavender, set against a warm base of leather and oud. The house calls it smooth, calculated and dynamic. We list it with strong intensity.

Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Bonus opens with orange, lemon, citron, mint, black currant and coriander, has May rose, apricot, basil and carrot seeds in the heart, and ends on dates, ambrette and fig. Mint and basil carry the green here, over fruit. The house calls it a bold balance of freshness, warmth and intrigue. The concentration is parfum, in 100 ml, with strong intensity and spring, summer and autumn tags.

Stéphane Humbert Lucas Pink Boa lists rosemary, bergamot and blackcurrant on top, vodka, raspberry and basil in the heart, and patchouli, amber, olibanum and musk in the base. Rosemary and basil give a herbal frame to a sweet, fruity composition that the house calls a tangy gourmand snake. It is an eau de parfum in 50 ml, listed with moderate intensity and spring and summer tags.

Tea
Le Labo Thé Noir 29 is the tea perfume of the group. The house gives bergamot, fig, bay leaves, cedarwood, vetiver, musk and black tea leaves as one list and calls it an ode to the black tea leaf. It describes a swing between the lightness of bergamot, fig and bay leaves and the depth of cedarwood, vetiver and musk, with a dry, leafy character in the drydown. We list it as an eau de parfum in 100 ml.

Moss
Goldfield & Banks Pacific Rock Moss is built around Australian coastal moss. The house gives its notes as one list: Australian coastal moss, lemon from Italy, sage from France, geranium from Egypt, cedarwood from Virginia and white musk. It files the scent as an aromatic aquatic and speaks of sea spray and summer light, so the green here is cool and coastal rather than leafy. It is the house's first formulation, an eau de parfum in 50 ml.

Sospiro Mezzo puts lavender and juniper on top, vetiver in the heart and moss in the base. Bergamot and mandarin open it, apple, ginger and magnolia fill the heart, and tonka, musk and patchouli complete the base. The house calls it fresh and composed and says it is about suspended presence. The eau de parfum we list is 100 ml, with moderate intensity and spring, summer and autumn tags.

Roots
Essential Parfums Bois Impérial gives its notes as one list: Thai basil, Timut pepper absolute from Nepal, Haitian vetiver oil, Georgywood, Petalia, Akigalawood, Indonesian patchouli oil and Ambrofix. The house's text runs from crushed basil and pepper through a woody middle of vetiver and Georgywood to patchouli. Basil is the herb, vetiver the root. It is an eau de parfum in 100 ml, with strong intensity and autumn and winter tags.

Amouage Reflection Man puts rosemary, red pepper berries and bitter orange leaves on top, neroli, orris, jasmine and ylang-ylang in the heart, and vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood in the base. The house files it under fougère and amber. The green is the rosemary and the leaves above and the vetiver below. The eau de parfum we list is 100 ml, listed for men, with moderate intensity and spring and autumn tags.

Green perfume for women and for men
Green is a scent family, not a gender. Seven of the eight perfumes above are listed as unisex, and Amouage Reflection Man is listed for men. The label comes from the house, and taste decides the rest.
If you are looking for green perfume for women or green perfume for men, the notes are a better guide than the label. Lavender, mint and tea read as light and clean, while vetiver, patchouli and oud add weight. Our unisex perfumes collection gathers more of them.
Which green perfume to try first
Let the kind of green decide. For a bright herbal start, Bonus and Mezzo are the clearest. For tea there is Thé Noir 29, for the coast Pacific Rock Moss, and for darker, woodier green Blockade and Bois Impérial. Our list holds six eaux de parfum, plus one extrait and one parfum.
