What Does Vetiver Smell Like? Vetiver in Perfume Explained

Vetiver is dry, earthy and green, and it usually works as a base note that gives a perfume structure. This guide explains the note and shows seven ways our perfumes use it.

Argos Triumph of Bacchus Eau de Parfum 100 ml bottle

The short answer to “what does vetiver smell like” is dry, earthy and green. Vetiver is the root of a tall tropical grass, and perfumers use its oil for a clean, grounded earthiness that can lean fresh and grassy or darker and smoky. It is rarely the first thing you notice in a perfume, but many compositions would feel thinner without it.

This guide explains the note in plain words and then looks at seven perfumes from our range that list it, one per house. Six of them record vetiver in the base and one in the heart. Our perfume glossary explains unfamiliar terms, and the vetiver perfumes collection gathers every perfume that lists the note.

What does vetiver smell like in perfume

Picture damp soil, freshly pulled roots and dry grass. That earthy core stays the same, while the rest shifts with the place the plant grows and the way the oil is made. Perfumers usually describe three facets, and a single perfume often shows more than one.

  • Green and fresh. Crisp and grassy, close to a cut stem. It sits easily next to citrus, herbs and tea.
  • Earthy and rooty. Dry soil with a cool, quiet calm. This is the facet that makes vetiver feel grounded.
  • Smoky and woody. Darker, drier and a little bitter. It works well with cedar, sandalwood and spice.

Why vetiver gives a perfume structure

The root oil is dry and heavy, so it evaporates slowly and usually sits in the base, below the notes you smell first. Citrus and herbs open a perfume brightly but fade quickly. Vetiver gives them something dry to rest on, which is why it turns up so often in fresh and woody compositions. In a wood perfume it adds a green, earthy edge that keeps cedar or sandalwood from feeling flat.

Where the note sits matters. A base note shapes the long, quiet part of a perfume, while a heart note belongs to the middle, where the character is set. If tiers are new to you, our guide to reading a fragrance pyramid explains how they work together.

Seven perfumes with vetiver

The selection is simple. Each perfume below lists vetiver in its recorded notes, there is one per house, and together they show the note in the heart and in the base, next to fruit, flowers, spice, tea and wood. Nothing here is a ranking. All seven are listed as unisex.

In the heart

Argos Triumph of Bacchus is the one perfume here that records vetiver in the heart, next to patchouli, jasmine and tonka bean. Saffron, rum, white peach and green apple sit above it, and tobacco, amber, Mysore sandalwood, musk and vanilla below. The dry root note sits between the fruit of the opening and the sweetness of the base. Argos builds this eau de parfum around Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. We list it with strong intensity and autumn and winter tags.

Fresh and green

Fascent I Fig You is the greenest example. Green tea, sage and citruses open it, fig leaf and carrot seeds form the heart, and vetiver and cedar wood make the base. The house calls it a fresh, green and energetic scent for staying focused and grounded, and vetiver is the dry root under all those leaves. It is an eau de parfum in 30 ml, listed with moderate intensity and spring and summer tags.

Sospiro Vibrato opens with grapefruit, bergamot, mandarin, ginger and rosemary, has magnolia, Damascenia rose and blond wood in the heart, and rests on vetiver, patchouli, Indian sandalwood, musk, crystal amber and tonka. Sospiro describes a balance between freshness and depth, and vetiver is the first note of the base, the dry part of that depth. The house likes musical names, and Vibrato is one of them. It is an eau de parfum in 100 ml.

Dry and woody

Ex Nihilo The Hedonist opens with bergamot and ginger, puts cedarwood and Akigalawood™ in the heart, and ends on vetiver, musks and tonka bean. The house describes wild landscapes, black stones and extreme temperatures, and says that cedarwood and Haitian vetiver ground the scent. We list it as an eau de parfum with strong intensity.

Penhaligon's Juniper Sling shows the note with very little around it. The house gives three key notes, juniper berry on top, black pepper in the heart and vetiver in the base, and names angelica in its text. Of the three key notes, vetiver is the only dry, earthy one, under a spicy, juniper-led opening. It is an eau de toilette in 100 ml from the British Tales collection, and the house calls it a gin lover's scent.

Soft and sweet

Nishane Hundred Silent Ways is an extrait with tuberose, mandarin and peach on top, white jasmine, gardenia and orris in the heart, and vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver in the base. Here vetiver is a dry thread under the vanilla and the white flowers, which helps keep the sweetness dry. Nishane takes the name from a line by the poet Rumi.

Lorenzo Pazzaglia Summer Hammer is a summer scent with mango, pineapple, coconut, tropical notes, bergamot and white rhum on top, coconut milk, marine notes and white flowers in the heart, and vetiver, musk, sandalwood and Indian amber in the base. The house speaks of a base of green notes and sandalwood, and vetiver gives the tropical fruit something dry to stand on. It is an extrait in 50 ml.

Which vetiver perfume to try first

Let taste decide. If you like green and fresh, start with I Fig You or Vibrato. If you prefer dry wood and spice, look at The Hedonist or Juniper Sling. If you like sweetness with a dry floor, Hundred Silent Ways, Summer Hammer and Triumph of Bacchus show it in three different ways.

Concentration changes how the note reads. Our list holds one eau de toilette, four eaux de parfum and two extraits. A higher concentration usually carries a base note such as vetiver more densely, while an eau de toilette keeps it lighter and fresher. For the wider green family, our guide to green perfume adds herbs, tea and moss.

Frequently asked questions

What does vetiver smell like in fragrance?

Dry, earthy and green, with a cool, grounded feel. Depending on the version it can be crisp and grassy or darker and smoky, and it usually works as a base note.

Is vetiver a base note?

Usually. Of the seven perfumes above, six list it in the base and one, Triumph of Bacchus, lists it in the heart. The dry, heavy oil evaporates slowly, which suits the base.

Is vetiver a summer or a winter note?

Neither on its own. The seven perfumes carry season tags from spring and summer, such as I Fig You and Vibrato, to autumn and winter, such as Hundred Silent Ways and The Hedonist.
