A short guide to the niche perfume houses in our collection, from Al Ambra to Zoologist. Each entry is one factual paragraph drawn from our research, grouped by origin.

A niche house is easiest to understand through what it actually does. This guide gives one short, factual paragraph on each house in the NicheGems collection, drawn from the research behind our product pages. Houses are grouped by origin, and where a house does not state its country or founding year we say so instead of guessing. Not every house began in perfume: Maison Margiela started in fashion, and Le Labo, Jo Malone London and Penhaligon's belong to large groups.

French houses

Diptyque: Founded in Paris in 1961 by three friends, beginning as a boutique on boulevard Saint-Germain. Each perfume carries an illustrated oval label.

Essential Parfums: Founded in Paris in 2018 by Géraldine Archambault. Each eau de parfum is created by a different perfumer, who signs the bottle.

Ex Nihilo: Founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier. Emerging perfumers receive complete creative freedom.

Fascent: Founded in 2023 by Fanny Fortin Descamps and Edwina Réthoré. Unisex perfumes in refillable 30 ml bottles, made to be worn alone or layered.

Maison Crivelli: An independent Paris house founded in 2018 by Thibaud Crivelli. Each perfume starts from a real experience with raw materials.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian: Co-founded in Paris in 2009 by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya. The collection is conceived as a "fragrance wardrobe" to wear according to mood.

Maison Margiela: A fashion house founded in 1988. Its Replica collection, from 2012, turns memories such as a fireplace or a jazz club into scents.

Matière Première: Perfumer Aurélien Guichard grows raw materials on his own land in Grasse. Each perfume is built around an "overdose" of one central natural material.

Stéphane Humbert Lucas: Founded in Paris in 2012 by a painter and poet who describes himself as a synesthete. His first collection is La Collection 777.

Italian houses

Lorenzo Pazzaglia: PAX by Lorenzo Pazzaglia, an Italian artistic perfumery from Cagli, founded in 2021. Every perfume is an extrait de parfum.

Sospiro: Founded in Italy in 2011 and run from Dubai since 2022. Each perfume is built like a musical score, and many carry musical names.

Tiziana Terenzi: Grew out of the Terenzi family candle workshop in Cattolica, "Since 1968". Its extraits are told as stories by Tiziana and Paolo Terenzi.

Xerjoff: Founded in Turin in 2007 by Sergio Momo and Dominique Salvo. Its Join The Club collection keeps the notes undisclosed.

Houses with no stated origin

Jo Milano Paris: Its name says Paris, its webshop shows a New York address, and it gives no founder or year. Its Game of Spades line takes names from cards and gemstones.

Houses differ most in how they present their notes. Our guide to reading a fragrance pyramid explains the options, and our advice on choosing without smelling first shows how to pick a first perfume from any of these houses. The brands page lists every house in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Which niche house should I start with?

Start with the house whose idea appeals to you. A small, coherent range, such as Fascent with eight perfumes, makes comparing easy, and houses that name their perfumers show you who made what.

Do all these houses publish their notes?

Most do. Nasomatto and Orto Parisi publish none, Xerjoff keeps one collection undisclosed, and Le Labo and Maison Crivelli list materials rather than a three-tier pyramid.

Are all these houses independent?

No. Le Labo and Jo Malone London belong to The Estée Lauder Companies, Penhaligon's to Puig, and Maison Margiela is a fashion house. Others, such as Zoologist and Pernoire, are founder-led houses of their own.
