Nishane Hacivat Notes: Scent, Structure and Who It Suits

A tier-by-tier reading of the Nishane Hacivat notes, the character of the scent, the seasons it suits and the perfumes of the same house that share some of its notes.

Nishane Hacivat Extrait de Parfum 100 ml bottle

The Nishane Hacivat notes tell most of the story: Nishane Hacivat is an Extrait de Parfum that places bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit over jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood, and closes on clearwood, oakmoss and dry timberwood. The house presents it as a tribute to elegance, kindness and a love of art, and it borrows its name from a character of Turkish shadow theatre. This article takes the tiers one at a time, follows how the scent moves, and says who it suits and when.

The house idea behind Hacivat

Hacivat belongs to the Shadow Play Trilogy, the collection of the house that is based on traditional shadow theatre. Nishane was founded in Istanbul in 2012 by Mert Güzel and Murat Katran, and the bottle label carries the name of a city, which is Istanbul for this perfume. The house calls Hacivat a chypre built on pineapple and bergamot and backed by woody notes, with a bright, sparkling character. A chypre is a classic perfume structure, commonly a citrus opening over a mossy, woody base, and that is the shape you will see in the notes below.

Nishane Hacivat notes, tier by tier

The house lists the notes in three tiers. If that structure is new to you, our explainer on the fragrance pyramid shows how to use it when you compare perfumes.

The top tier holds bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit. Bergamot and grapefruit are citrus notes, usually clean and slightly bitter, and they give the opening its brightness. Pineapple is the fruit that the house puts at the centre of its description, and it adds a juicy, sunny edge. Together they open the perfume with sparkle rather than sweetness. Other perfumes with this fruit are gathered in our pineapple collection.

The heart is jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood. Jasmine is a white flower and adds a soft floral line, patchouli brings earthy depth, and cedarwood contributes a dry, clean wood. This is the point where the fruit hands over to the darker materials, and the perfume starts to feel structured.

The base is clearwood, oakmoss and dry timberwood. Oakmoss is the classic moss note of chypre perfumes and is commonly described as green, damp and dry at the same time. The two woods, clearwood and dry timberwood, keep the finish lean. None of the three is sweet, so the perfume ends dry and green instead of warm and soft.

How the scent moves on skin

The opening is the brightest part: citrus and pineapple arrive together and fade first. Next jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood come forward and give the perfume its shape. Later the moss and the woods take over and stay closest to the skin as a dry, green finish. The line runs from bright to dry, which is the usual arc of a chypre and the reason Hacivat feels composed. An extrait usually holds more perfume oil than an eau de parfum, so a small amount is often enough.

Nishane Hacivat scent: fresh, green and dry

Our family label for Hacivat is Citrus / Chypre / Woody, and we tag the scent citrus, woody and fruity. The intensity tag is strong. If you came here for a Nishane Hacivat review, what you will find is a close reading of the recorded notes and of our own tags, not a hands-on test. In plain words, the scent is fresh, fruity and green at the start, dry and mossy at the end, with very little sweetness on the way.

Who Nishane Hacivat suits, and when

The house states no gender for Hacivat and we list it as unisex. We tag it for daily wear, work and special occasions, and for spring, summer and autumn. It suits people who like a fresh, structured perfume more than a sweet one and who are comfortable with moss and wood in the finish. Mild and warm weather is its natural setting, and we do not tag it for winter. Anyone who wants a creamy or sugary perfume will find other Nishane titles a closer match.

Concentration, size and the X version

We list Hacivat as an Extrait de Parfum in 100 ml, and the catalogue holds no other concentration or size of this perfume. The closest relative is Hacivat X, a separate perfume from the X Collection of the house, a line that reworks earlier perfumes. The house calls it a new interpretation of Hacivat that keeps the structure of pineapple, bergamot and woods. Pink pepper joins the top, the heart becomes lime, jasmine and orange flower, and the base is patchouli, cedarwood heart and Haitian vetiver. We tag it moderate where Hacivat is strong. Our comparison of the X versions sets the pairs side by side.

Ani also lists bergamot, patchouli and cedarwood, but it builds them differently. Pink pepper, blue ginger, Turkish rose and a long base of vanilla, benzoin and ambergris make it a warm, spiced extrait that we tag for evenings, autumn and winter. It is a natural next step for someone who likes the woods of Hacivat and wants warmth instead of moss.

Wūlóng Chá shares the bergamot and the citrus-led opening. Orange, litsea and mandarin join it, oolong tea and nutmeg form the heart, and musk and fig make up the base. It comes in 50 ml, and we tag it moderate, for daily wear and work in spring and summer.
