What Does Patchouli Smell Like in Perfume?
Patchouli is earthy, damp and woody, sometimes dark and sweet, and it usually anchors the base of a perfume. Here is how it smells, why it sits in the base and how seven of our perfumes use it.
The short answer to “what does patchouli smell like” is earthy, damp and woody, with a dark sweetness that some people find almost chocolate-like and others find sharp and camphor-like. Patchouli is the leaf of a tropical plant, and perfumers use its oil for depth. It is one of the most recognisable base notes, and its character changes with whatever stands next to it.
After a plain description of the note, the guide looks at seven perfumes from our range that list it, one per house. Some houses place it in the heart or the base of a pyramid, others give a single list of raw materials. Our perfume glossary explains unfamiliar terms, and the patchouli perfumes collection gathers every perfume that lists the note.
What does patchouli smell like in perfume
Start with the forest floor after rain: damp earth, dry leaves, a little wood. That is the core. Perfumers usually describe the note through four facets, and a single perfume often shows two or three of them.
- Earthy and damp. Soil, a moss-like depth, cool shade. This is the facet most people recognise first.
- Woody and dry. Closer to dry wood than to soil, which is why it blends easily with cedar and sandalwood.
- Dark and sweet. A rich, almost chocolate-like warmth, strongest next to vanilla and amber.
- Sharp and camphor-like. A cool, clean, slightly sharp edge that shows most when little sweetness stands beside it.
Why patchouli sits in the base
The oil is dense and evaporates slowly, so patchouli usually sits in the base and shapes the long, quiet part of a perfume after the top notes have gone. Perfumers use it to add depth and to hold lighter materials in place. A little gives a perfume a darker, rounder floor, and a lot makes the whole composition earthy.
The note also behaves differently next to different partners. With rose it turns dark and woody, with vanilla and amber it turns warm and rich, and with citrus and green notes it turns clean and dry. Two of the houses below name Indonesia as the origin. If you want to revisit the tiers, our guide to reading a fragrance pyramid explains how they fit together.
Seven perfumes with patchouli
Each perfume below lists patchouli in its recorded notes, there is one per house, and together they show the note in the heart, in the base and in single lists of raw materials, next to rose, vanilla, spice, fruit and green leaves. No ranking is implied. The house label for all seven is unisex.
In the heart
Reinvented Ode To Psyche is the one perfume here that records patchouli in the heart, between cashmere wood and cedarwood. Geranium, juniper and pink pepper open it, and vetiver, amber and white musk make the base. Together the heart and base give a smooth, woody and earthy line. The house calls it a limited-edition extrait about memory and reinvention and describes it as contemplative and calm. We list it in 75 ml.

In the base, with sweetness and fruit
Al Ambra Black Forest Elixir is a clean aldehydic floral, with aldehydes, bergamot, mandarin orange and white peach on top, orange blossom, lily of the valley and ambrette in the heart, and musk, vanilla, ambroxan, patchouli and woods in the base. Patchouli sits among the soft base notes here and gives the airy floral a little earth. The house calls it a modernised aldehydic floral for daily and office wear. The extrait we list is 50 ml.

Zoologist Rabbit has a green vegetable leaves accord, cinnamon, bergamot and apple on top, a clover flower accord, carrot, jasmine absolute and violet in the heart, and patchouli, musks, hay, white almond, vanilla and a biscuit accord in the base. The house's tagline is carrot cake garnished with dry hay, and patchouli gives the base an earthy counterweight to the vanilla, almond and biscuit. We list this extrait in 60 ml.

Jo Malone London English Pear & Freesia is a cologne in 100 ml and the lightest perfume here. The house gives one note per level, Williams pear on top, freesia in the heart and patchouli in the base, and its text adds rose. Patchouli gives the fresh fruit and the white flower something earthy to stand on, and the house itself says the scent is rooted in patchouli. We list it as light, with spring and summer tags.

In single lists
Matière Première Radical Rose gives five notes as one list: rose centifolia absolute from France, saffron, pepper berries essence from Jamaica, Indonesian patchouli essence and labdanum absolute from Andalusia. The house says the saffron and pepper sharpen the bright side of the rose, while patchouli and labdanum bring out its dark, woody facets. It is an eau de parfum in 100 ml and the clearest example here of patchouli next to rose.

Maison Crivelli Oud Stallion lists nine raw materials without tiers: cardamom absolute from India, oud, nutmeg essential oil from Indonesia, saffron, rose absolute from Turkey, cedarwood essential oil from Morocco, a leather accord, patchouli oil from Indonesia and roasted tonka bean absolute from Venezuela. The house's text puts patchouli and the roasted tonka beneath fresh spices, a smoky leather accord and oud. Here patchouli is a warm, dark floor for spice and leather. The size we list is 50 ml, again as an extrait.

Le Labo Baie 19 is the shortest list: juniper berry, patchouli and green leaves. The house aims at the crisp, drenched effect of rain on parched earth, known as petrichor, and describes dry juniper berry, patchouli and green leaves as if soaked by a bright rain after a long drought. Here patchouli is the earth itself. It is an eau de parfum in 50 ml, listed with moderate intensity and spring and autumn tags.

Which patchouli perfume to try first
Let the partner note decide. For sweet and soft, look at Black Forest Elixir or Rabbit. For rose, spice and leather, Radical Rose and Oud Stallion show the darker side. For earth and green leaves, Baie 19 is the simplest. For a light, fruity start there is English Pear & Freesia, and for a smooth woody heart there is Ode To Psyche.
Concentration matters too. Our list holds four extraits, two eaux de parfum and one cologne. A higher concentration usually carries a base note such as patchouli more densely, while a cologne keeps it light and quiet. Another earthy base note, vetiver, has its own guide: vetiver in perfume.
