Tubéreuse Astrale vs Hibiscus Mahajád: How They Differ

Two Maison Crivelli extraits compared by the house's own facts: tuberose against suede, hibiscus and rose against vanilla and leather. No verdict, only the differences.

Tubéreuse Astrale vs Hibiscus Mahajád is a comparison inside one house. Both perfumes are Maison Crivelli extraits, both were created with perfumer Quentin Bisch, and both carry a unisex label with us. One is a floral leather built on tuberose, the other a floral fruity built on hibiscus and rose. This article sets the two side by side by notes, concentration, size and mood, without naming a winner.

Tubéreuse Astrale vs Hibiscus Mahajád: the short answer

Maison Crivelli Tubéreuse Astrale is the night-time one. The house pictures a summer night under the Milky Way and sets powdery tuberose against velvety suede, with osmanthus, cinnamon bark, cistus and musks around the flower. Our listing is a 50 ml bottle.

Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajád is the tea-and-rose one. It starts from the memory of sipping hibiscus tea in the middle of a gemstone market and pairs a flamboyant hibiscus and rose with vanilla bean, leather and musks. Our listing is a 100 ml bottle.

The idea behind each Crivelli perfume

Maison Crivelli builds every perfume on a real experience that its founder, Thibaud Crivelli, had with raw materials, and the perfumers are briefed with a moodboard that covers more than scent. Here the two experiences sit far apart. One is a warm night outdoors, with white flowers in the air. The other is a market full of gemstones, where someone is sipping hibiscus tea.

Both extraits were created with the same perfumer, Quentin Bisch, which makes the contrast more interesting: one hand, two different pictures. The house works with several outside perfumers and credits one for each perfume.

Notes side by side

Neither perfume has a top, heart and base pyramid on the house's pages. The house gives a list of key raw materials instead, and we keep it flat, in the house's order.

  • Tubéreuse Astrale: cinnamon bark essential oil, tuberose absolute, osmanthus absolute, carrot seeds essential oil, cistus absolute, leather accord, musks.
  • Hibiscus Mahajád: Rose Damascena absolute, vanilla absolute, leather, spearmint essential oil, cassis, ambrette seeds absolute, cinnamon essential oil.

What the two lists share is small but telling. Both include leather, and both include cinnamon, as bark oil in one and as essential oil in the other. Each also lists the absolute of a flower that the house puts at the centre of its description: tuberose absolute in the first, Rose Damascena absolute in the second. Everything else differs. Tubéreuse Astrale adds osmanthus, carrot seeds, cistus and musks, a mix the house frames as powdery and velvety. Hibiscus Mahajád adds vanilla absolute, spearmint, cassis and ambrette seeds, which pulls it towards fruit, mint and a soft, sweet base.

One detail is worth knowing. The key raw materials we hold for Hibiscus Mahajád do not name hibiscus itself, so the flower belongs to the house's description of the perfume rather than to the list.

Concentration, size and mood

Both are an Extrait de Parfum at 32% by the house's own figures, so the strength is the same. At that level a perfume is dense and usually stays close to the skin, which is why a few sprays are enough. The difference is the bottle: Tubéreuse Astrale is 50 ml and Hibiscus Mahajád is 100 ml.

Our tags rate both as strong and mark both for evenings and special occasions. The seasons differ: Tubéreuse Astrale carries the tags summer and autumn, Hibiscus Mahajád autumn and winter. That fits the pictures, a warm night outdoors on one side and, on the other, a floral with cinnamon, vanilla and leather.

What Maison Crivelli says about its extraits

Both perfumes belong to the house's extrait line, which the brand sets at 30 to 32%, while its eaux de parfum run from 15 to 20%. The brand describes its extraits as vegan creations, and many of its raw materials carry the ORPUR label, a mark for natural ingredients from the Givaudan perfume house. It also commits to formulas without phthalates and colourants, with no ingredients of animal origin and no animal testing, and it notes that the colour of natural materials can vary from batch to batch.

Where to begin with these two

If you like white flowers but prefer them dressed in leather and spice rather than in soft sweetness, start with Tubéreuse Astrale. If you want a floral with a tart, fruity edge and a warm, vanilla-leaning base, start with Hibiscus Mahajád. Neither choice is a verdict on the other; they simply ask for different moods.
