Amouage Guidance Notes: Scent, Structure and Who It Suits
A close reading of the Amouage Guidance notes, from pear and frankincense to saffron, rose and ambergris, and of who this unisex Eau de Parfum suits.
Amouage Guidance notes are easiest to understand through the idea behind them. Amouage Guidance is a unisex Eau de Parfum from the Escape chapter of the Odyssey Collection, released in 2023, and it reworks the house triad of rose, frankincense and ambergris. Quentin Bisch composed it, with Renaud Salmon as Chief Creative Officer, and the brand says it reads like a poem and feels like an embrace. Below you find the pyramid tier by tier, how the scent moves, who it suits and which other Amouage perfumes share part of its notes.

Amouage Guidance notes, tier by tier
The brand gives Guidance a full pyramid, so the notes can be followed in the order in which they appear. The top lists pear, frankincense and hazelnut. The heart lists saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus. The base lists cistus, sandalwood, Akigalawood, ambergris and vanilla. If the tiers are new to you, our guide to reading a fragrance pyramid explains what each one does.
Pear, frankincense and hazelnut open the scent. Pear brings a soft, juicy fruit, hazelnut a quiet, rounded warmth, and frankincense, a resin that usually smells dry and warm, is present from the first minutes instead of waiting in the base. The structure is easy to describe: a friendly, lightly fruity start that already points toward resin.
The heart is where the house triad shows. Saffron brings a warm, spicy edge, rose forms the centre, and jasmine sambac and osmanthus add white petals and a soft, slightly fruity floral tone. Together they make a rich floral that stays warm instead of turning fresh.
The base holds cistus, sandalwood, Akigalawood, ambergris and vanilla. Cistus is a shrub whose resin gives warmth in the direction of amber. Sandalwood and Akigalawood supply the woody body, ambergris adds a soft glow that is commonly described as slightly salty, and vanilla rounds the finish without turning the perfume into a dessert.
Read as a sequence, the scent moves from fruit and resin to flowers and spice, then settles into wood, amber and vanilla. Because frankincense appears on top and ambergris in the base, the house triad frames the whole development: resin at the start, the rose in the middle and ambergris at the end.
The Amouage Guidance scent in plain words
In plain words, Guidance is a rich, warm floral over a resinous, ambery base. Rose and saffron set the tone, resin and wood add depth, and vanilla keeps the edges soft. Its family is listed as floral and amber, and our own scent tags add woody. The intensity tag is moderate, which suits an Eau de Parfum at this level: present and rounded rather than loud.
If you searched for an Amouage Guidance review, note that this page holds no personal impressions. It sets out the structure the house itself records, together with our own tags, and nothing beyond that.
Who Guidance suits, and when
Amouage files Guidance with its universal perfumes, so no gender is assumed. It suits people who like rose with some depth and who enjoy saffron, resin and vanilla in a form that is warm but not sugary. Our tags point to evenings and special occasions in autumn and winter, such as a dinner, the theatre or a formal evening, when a rich floral with a little shadow fits the setting.
Concentration, size and the next step
We list Guidance as an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml. The brand states 25% perfume oil and four weeks of ageing, which sits inside the house's own scale: Eau de Parfum at 15 to 35% perfume oil and Extrait de Parfum at 40 to 56%. There is no other size or concentration of this perfume in our range. In general, a higher share of perfume oil usually makes a perfume denser, and the weight of the base notes counts as much as the percentage.
The next step in the family is Amouage Guidance 46, a separate Extrait de Parfum in 100 ml with 46% perfume oil. The brand says nothing was removed from the original formula and ingredients were added: rose water, pink pepper and bitter almond on top, ambrette, Georgywood and cypriol in the base. Our Amouage Guidance vs Guidance 46 article sets the two side by side.

Other Amouage perfumes with shared notes
Amouage Outlands is an Essence de Parfum with 30% perfume oil and a different build, yet it shares frankincense, rose, saffron, ambergris and vanilla with Guidance. Around them it adds a cardamom and citrus opening, a green patchouli heart and a base of balsams and resins. Where Guidance leans floral, our tags place Outlands among the woody, amber and spicy scents, and among our strong perfumes.

Amouage Reflection Man is the daytime option next to Guidance: an Eau de Parfum with 25% perfume oil, the same share as Guidance, and eight weeks of ageing according to the brand. It shares jasmine and sandalwood with Guidance but builds them on rosemary, neroli, orris and vetiver. Amouage lists it as a men's fragrance and files it under fougère and amber, and our tags point to everyday wear and the office in spring and autumn.
