What Does Lavender Smell Like? Lavender in Perfume Explained
Lavender is herbal and clean, but in perfume it also turns warm, sweet or sharp depending on its partners. Read how the note works and see seven perfumes from our range that use it.
The question “what does lavender smell like” has a short answer and a longer one. The short one is herbal, clean and softly floral, with a cool, slightly camphor-like freshness. The longer one is that perfumers rarely stop there. Next to vanilla and tonka bean lavender turns warm and sweet, next to citrus it turns sharp and bright, and next to rose it goes soft and floral. This guide covers the note, its place in a perfume and seven perfumes from our range, one per house, that use it.
What does lavender smell like: herbal, clean and softly floral
Lavender is an aromatic herb with small purple flowers, and its scent is commonly described as herbal, clean and gently floral. Many people also notice a cool, camphor-like edge and a dry, hay-like sweetness underneath. It feels tidy and familiar, which is why it so often opens a perfume. It also belongs to no single audience: six of the seven perfumes below carry a unisex label and the seventh a women’s label.
Where lavender sits in a perfume
Lavender is a classic opening note, and the range confirms it. Four of our seven perfumes list it at the top, two in the heart and one in a flat list without tiers. A top note is the first impression and gives way to what lies beneath, so lavender at the top works mostly as a clean doorway. In the heart it carries more weight and sits closer to the base. If you want to see where aromatic scents sit among the other families, our fragrance families guide gives the overview, and the perfume glossary explains top, heart and base.
What goes with lavender
Four kinds of company decide what lavender does in the perfumes below.
- Warm, sweet notes. Vanilla, tonka bean, amber and labdanum round lavender into something soft and powdery.
- Citrus and spice. Bergamot, lemon, lime, mandarin, cardamom and pink pepper sharpen it and keep it bright.
- Herbs and green notes. Thyme, sage and cut grass pull it into a green, herbal picture.
- Resin, wood and rose. Myrrh, agarwood, sandalwood and a rose absolute add depth or floral softness.
How our perfumes use lavender
With warm, sweet and resinous notes
Jo Malone London Myrrh & Tonka is the simplest example. Lavender stands alone at the top, Omumbiri myrrh sits in the heart and tonka bean in the base, so the clean herb opens onto resin and warm sweetness. The house links the myrrh to the golden dunes of the Namib desert and mentions almond and vanilla tones in the tonka bean. We list it as a Cologne Intense in 100 ml, with strong, evening, autumn and winter tags.

Argos Fall of Phaeton sets lavender in the heart, between labdanum and agarwood. Bergamot, lemon, cardamom, pink peppercorn and ginger come first, and musk, leather, tonka bean and vanilla close it. The house builds it as a bold, fiery, spicy-woody composition for the night, drawn from Rubens’ painting of Phaeton and the myth of his fall. It is an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml with a strong tag.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Grand Soir gives its notes without tiers: cinnamon tree, vanilla amber accord, cistus labdanum and lavender. The house describes an evening perfume set in the moment before the city lights come on, when the sky turns from honey tones to amber, over a warm amber-vanilla base with benzoin facets. Lavender is the herbal edge of a warm amber picture. We list it as an Eau de Parfum in 35 ml, strong, for evenings and special occasions.

Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur puts lavender at the top with bergamot and mandarin, above a heart of amber, vanilla and musk and a base of sandalwood and musk. Maurice Roucel, named by the house, composed it, and the house calls it its warmest amber fragrance, floral-free and confident. The lavender is the cool first impression before the warm part begins. We list it as an Eau de Parfum in 50 ml, strong, for autumn and winter evenings.

With citrus, herbs and fruit
Roja Parfums Isola Blu places lavender in a bright top with lemon, bergamot, lime and thyme. Apple, blackcurrant, coconut, orange blossom, Jasmin de Grasse, lily and champaca follow, over a long base that includes cut grass, amber and a hint of leather. The house ties it to a Mediterranean island, a day on a yacht and a villa dinner at sunset. We list it as a Parfum in 50 ml with a moderate tag, for spring and summer.

Nishane Ani X keeps lavender in the heart with sage, green apple, blackcurrant, rose and patchouli. Above it, bergamot, lemon, watery notes, honeydew melon, cardamom, blue ginger and pink pepper make a juicy top, and below sit cedarwood, cashmere wood, vanilla, ambergris, white musk and sandalwood. The house describes a refreshed Ani with a richer burst of citrus and the vanilla the original is known for. It is an Extrait de Parfum in 100 ml, moderate, for daily, work and special wear.

With rose
Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance brings lavender and rose together. The house lists lavender essence at the top, Bulgarian rose absolute in the heart and vanilla absolute in the base, and its text adds patchouli. It presents the perfume as one of its original rose creations, confident and thorny. Here lavender is the herbal edge of a floral perfume. We list it as an Eau de Parfum in 100 ml, strong, with the women’s label.

Choosing a lavender perfume
Choose by what you want beside the herb. For lavender with a warm, resinous dryness, begin with Myrrh & Tonka. Fall of Phaeton gives spice and a darker evening mood, and Grand Soir or Musc Ravageur give an amber picture. Isola Blu and Ani X bring citrus and herbs for spring or summer, and Lady Vengeance puts lavender beside rose.
Concentration changes how much weight lavender carries. A cologne is usually the lightest style and a parfum or extrait the densest, with the eau de parfum between them. Four of the seven are an Eau de Parfum, and the others are a Cologne Intense, a Parfum and an Extrait de Parfum. Browse the cologne collection and the Eau de Parfum collection.
