Citrus Perfume: Lemon, Bergamot and Grapefruit in Niche

Eight niche citrus perfumes, one for each fruit from lemon and grapefruit to yuzu and orange. Notes, what holds the citrus in place, and who each one suits.

Byredo Gypsy Water Eau de Parfum 50 ml bottle

A citrus perfume is built on the peel of fruits such as lemon, orange, mandarin and grapefruit, and the family is known for being bright and quick. Citrus is also the most fleeting group of notes in perfumery, so a citrus perfume gets interesting once something underneath gives it a floor to stand on. This selection takes eight niche perfumes, one for each fruit, and shows what holds the citrus in place.

How we chose these citrus perfumes

Every perfume here carries the scent tag citrus in our texts. From that group we took one for each fruit the houses name in their notes: lemon, grapefruit, lime, bitter orange, mandarin, bergamot, yuzu, citron and orange. We kept to one perfume per house and used each perfume once, so the order is not a ranking. The notes below are the houses' own, and where a house gives no tiers we say so. You can see the whole group in the citrus scent collection.

What does citrus smell like in perfume: from sharp to soft

Each fruit has its own character. Lemon and lime are usually the sharpest, grapefruit adds a juicy bitterness, orange and mandarin are rounder and sweeter, and yuzu is commonly described as tart with a cool, slightly herbal edge. Bergamot sits between citrus and flower, which is why it appears in so many perfumes. Our bergamot explainer covers it in depth, so this article stays with the wider family.

Why citrus is fleeting, and what holds it

Citrus materials are among the lightest in perfumery, so they usually leave the skin first. That is why almost every pyramid puts them on top, and why a citrus perfume that keeps its shape has something underneath. Herbs and mint stretch the freshness, woods and vetiver give the citrus a floor, and musk or amber rounds off the end. The eight perfumes below show each kind of support in turn. For where citrus sits among the other scent families, see our guide to fragrance families, and the citrus fruit note collection lists every perfume with citrus in its notes.

Citrus perfume by fruit: eight niche choices

Lemon: Byredo Gypsy Water

Byredo Gypsy Water is the lemon here, with bergamot, juniper berries and pepper beside it. The house calls the opening outdoorsy and sets it over incense, orris and pine needle in the heart, with amber, sandalwood and vanilla in the base. The citrus comes out dry and resinous rather than sweet. We tag it woody and aromatic as well as citrus, at a moderate intensity, for spring and autumn.

Grapefruit: Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Emerald

Grapefruit leads Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Emerald, with bergamot and ginger beside it. The heart is orange blossom and neroli with a second ginger note, and the base is soft musk with ambrette. The house calls it bold yet refined, with an edge. We tag it strong, for daily and work wear in spring and summer, which shows that a grapefruit perfume does not have to be thin.

Lime and bitter orange: Roja Parfums Burlington 1819

Roja Parfums Burlington 1819 covers lime and bitter orange, with grapefruit, mandarin and mint in a long top. The house gives no heart tier: after the top comes one long base line that runs from ginger, saffron and patchouli through rum, tobacco and cedarwood to benzoin, vanilla and musk. It is a tribute to London's Burlington Arcade, which opened in 1819. We tag it moderate, for daily and evening wear from spring to autumn.

Mandarin: Fragrance Du Bois Tropiques

Mandarin sits beside bergamot and tropical fruit in Fragrance Du Bois Tropiques, so the citrus turns sunny and juicy rather than sharp. Lavandin leads the heart, and caramel, amber and musk soften the base. The house sells it as a fruity floral for an endless summer. We tag it moderate, for daily wear and special occasions, in spring and summer. This is the fruit-led corner of the selection.

Bergamot: Nishane Hacivat X

Bergamot, pineapple and pink pepper open Nishane Hacivat X. The house lists lime in the heart, with jasmine and orange flower, so citrus appears in two tiers. The base is patchouli, cedarwood heart and Haitian vetiver. The house presents it as a new reading of Hacivat that keeps the chypre structure. We tag it moderate and woody as well as citrus. Every perfume that lists bergamot is gathered in the bergamot collection.

Yuzu: Pernoire Yuma

Yuzu and bergamot share the top of Pernoire Yuma with Swiss mint and peppermint, which is the herbs-hold-citrus idea at its plainest. Alpine breeze, edelweiss, ginger and cashmeran make the heart, and dry amber, vetiver, musk and patchouli the base. The house made it at 30% extrait concentration and says it starts from still mountain lakes and clear alpine air. We tag it strong, for spring and summer.

Citron and pomelo: Lorenzo Pazzaglia Ginfusion

The top of Lorenzo Pazzaglia Ginfusion names more citrus than any other perfume here: lemon, sweet orange, mandarin, orange zest, bergamot, lime, yuzu, neroli, citron and pomelo, plus peppermint and cassis. Juniper and a gin accord hold the heart with green tea and mate, and cedarwood, vetiver and cardamom ground the base. The house describes the mood of a gin-and-lemon cocktail. We tag it moderate, for daily and work wear.

Orange: Penhaligon's Luna

Penhaligon's Luna is the orange of the group, and the only eau de toilette. The house lists orange, bergamot, jasmine accord, rose and fir balsam as a flat list, with no top, heart or base, so we keep it flat too. It pictures the bath of the Moon Goddess, soothing and floral, and carries the women's label. We tag it light, for daily and evening wear in spring and summer.

Citrus perfume for men and women

Seven of the eight carry our unisex label, so a citrus perfume for men or a citrus perfume for women is a matter of taste here, not of the bottle. Luna is the exception: the house labels it for women. Labels like these describe how a house presents a perfume, and they are a starting point rather than a rule. You can browse the unisex collection or use the explore page to search by note and family.

Frequently asked questions

Why does citrus perfume fade quickly?

Citrus oils are light and evaporate quickly, so they usually thin out before the rest. A base of herbs, woods and musk, as in Yuma or Gypsy Water, gives the citrus something to rest on.

Is there a citrus perfume for men?

Seven of the eight perfumes here carry our unisex label, so they are not split by gender. Luna is the one the house labels for women. Pick by notes and season rather than by label.

Which citrus perfume suits summer?

Seven of the eight carry a summer tag; Gypsy Water is tagged spring and autumn instead. Luna is the one we tag light, which suits the warmest days.
