What does bergamot smell like: a bright, slightly bitter citrus peel with a soft floral edge that some describe as tea-like. In perfume it is one of the most common opening notes, and it rarely works alone. This explainer covers what the note is, why it usually sits on top, how houses play it, and how seven of our perfumes use it.

What does bergamot smell like: peel, flower and a little tea

Bergamot is a citrus fruit, and the oil used in perfumery usually comes from its peel. The scent is brighter and more floral than lemon and less sweet than orange, with a bitter edge that keeps it from turning sugary. Where houses name an origin it is commonly Italy: the Matière Première perfume below lists bergamot oil from Italy, and Xerjoff names Calabrian bergamot in its pyramids.

What is bergamot in perfume: a top note with a job

In a pyramid bergamot is almost always a top note. Citrus oils are light and evaporate quickly, so they are the first thing you meet after spraying and usually the first to thin out. Perfumers use that on purpose: bergamot gives a perfume its bright first impression and also a smooth bridge into the heart, where flowers, herbs and spices take over. Our guide to reading a fragrance pyramid explains the tiers, and the perfume glossary defines the terms used here.

What keeps bergamot from vanishing is what sits under it. Herbs such as lavender stretch its freshness, woods and vetiver give it a floor, and musk, amber or vanilla round off the ending. Houses play it from sparkling, with pepper and ginger, through sweet and warm, with honey and spice, to soft and clean, with blossom and musk. The seven perfumes below show that range.

How our perfumes use bergamot

Every perfume whose notes list bergamot is gathered in the bergamot collection. These seven are one per house. Six list bergamot on top, and Matière Première gives a flat list without tiers.

Juliette Has a Gun Lust for Sun lists bergamot on top with coconut and freesia, over a white-floral heart of gardenia, monoi, orange blossom and ylang-ylang. The base is ambroxan, musks and vanilla. Here bergamot is the bright opening of a sunny, creamy floral, the house's idea of a summer by the pool. Our tags for it are strong intensity, spring and summer.

Matière Première Neroli Oranger gives a flat list instead of a pyramid: orange blossom absolute and neroli oil from Tunisia, bergamot oil from Italy, ylang-ylang oil from the Comoros and floral musks. The house says the bergamot lifts the orange blossom, which is the central material. We tag it light, for spring and summer, daily and work wear.

Mind Games Blockade writes it as Bergamot Capua, beside mango skin, pink pepper and tomato leaf on top. Lavender, mango flower and watery cyclamen lead the heart, and the base is leather, patchouli and oud. Bergamot gives a green, fruity opening to a warm, woody leather, with lavender in between. We tag it strong, for evening and special occasions, in autumn, winter and spring.

Sarah Baker Gold Spot opens with orange blossom, bergamot, neroli, cypriol and petitgrain, a citrus-and-blossom top over a heart of dark chocolate, Laos oud and butterscotch. Suyufi agarwood, musk, amber, vanilla and sweet myrrh form the base. It shows bergamot as the light at the front of a heavy perfume. We tag it strong, for evening and special occasions in autumn and winter.

Reinvented Eureka starts with bergamot, coffee and violet leaf, an unusual trio built around the idea of a sudden flash of clarity. Jasmine, black pepper, nutmeg and cardamom make a spicy heart, and styrax, patchouli, tolu balm and sandalwood close it. Bergamot gives the coffee a bright edge at the start. Our tags say strong intensity, evening and special occasions, autumn and winter.

Les Eaux Primordiales Ambre Superfluide puts bergamot among honey, apple, cinnamon and sesame on top. Rose, cardamom and fir balsam form the heart, and amber, black vanilla, tobacco, rum and benzoin the base. Bergamot is a small bright note in a sweet, spiced amber, the house's picture of a winter day by the fire. Our tags match the two before it: strong, evening and special occasions, autumn and winter.

Al Ambra Dubai Musk is the quietest use. Bergamot sits on top with black currant, and the rest of the list is magnolia, mandarin orange, sandalwood and musk. The house calls it a minimalist skin scent, and our light intensity tag fits. Here bergamot is a clean, soft lift, not a loud opening. We tag it for spring and summer, daily and work wear.

Bergamot with lavender, vetiver, tonka and incense

Four partners keep coming back around bergamot. Xerjoff XJ 1861 Naxos lists lavender and incense from Oman beside bergamot and lemon on top, with tonka bean in the base. Nishane Hacivat X pairs bergamot with pineapple and pink pepper and sets Haitian vetiver in the base. In general terms, lavender adds herbal freshness, vetiver dry earth, tonka bean soft sweetness and incense a resinous haze.

Where to start with bergamot

For a light, clean start, look at Neroli Oranger or Dubai Musk, the two we tag light. For something sunny and sweet, try Lust for Sun. If you want bergamot at the front of a colder-weather perfume, Eureka, Gold Spot, Ambre Superfluide and Blockade are tagged for autumn and winter. To follow the citrus family further, the citrus scent collection gathers the perfumes our texts tag citrus, and our selection of citrus niche perfumes goes through it fruit by fruit.
