What Is Amber in Perfume? The Accord Explained
Amber in perfume is a warm, resinous accord and not a single material, and it is easy to confuse with ambergris and with amber jewellery. This guide explains what goes into it and shows seven perfumes that use it in different ways.
Search for "what is amber in perfume" and you find several answers at once, because the word covers an accord, a gemstone and a rare material of animal origin. In a note list, amber almost always means the accord: a warm, resinous, slightly sweet blend that perfumers compose rather than extract. This guide explains what goes into that blend, how it differs from ambergris, what amber smells of in perfume and where it sits in a pyramid. Seven perfumes from our range, picked by hand to show different ambers and not ranked, illustrate its different faces.
What is amber in perfume: an accord, not a single material
An accord is a blend of notes that comes across as one new impression, and amber is the clearest example. Perfumers commonly build it from resins such as labdanum and benzoin, add vanilla for sweetness and woods or musks for body, and the result is a warm, golden, slightly sweet scent that does not come from one raw material. Houses write it in different ways: "amber", "dry amber", "black amber", "amber woods" or "vanilla amber accord". The words point to the same family with a different balance. Our perfume glossary explains accord and other terms.
Tiziana Terenzi Laudano Nero shows how literal a house can be. It lists Black Amber in the top, beside absinthe, cognac, rosemary, Latakia tobacco and myrtle, and puts incense, agarwood, vetiver, musk, oak, Madagascar vanilla, bay leaf, caper and gum in the base. The brand describes a burst of camphor and absinthe against labdanum and cognac, set on precious woods and rare resins. So amber does not have to sit in the base, and here it is dark. It is an extrait de parfum of 100 ml, tagged strong.

Amber, ambergris and amber jewellery
Three different things share a name. The accord is what this article is about. Amber jewellery is fossilised tree resin, a gemstone, and the perfume accord is composed rather than taken from it. Ambergris is a rare material of animal origin, which a few houses list under its own name in the base. People mix them up often, but a note list that says "ambergris" names a different material from one that says "amber".
What does amber smell like in perfume: soft, dark or sweet
Most of our amber perfumes fall into one of three styles. The first is soft and dry, with the sweetness held back. The second is dark and resinous, with spice or incense close by. The third is sweet and syrupy, with fruit, honey or vanilla in front. A house rarely says which it is, so the notes around the amber tell you.
Soft and dry
Sospiro Il Padrino lists dry amber in the heart, between patchouli blossom and sandalwood, and puts labdanum, vanilla wood and Siam benzoin in the base. Dark rum, amaretto, blackcurrant and bergamot sit on top. The resins give the amber its structure, and the house describes the perfume as warm and enveloping, with calm authority. It is an eau de parfum of 100 ml.

Pernoire Anelo shows dry amber under fruit. Pineapple, pomelo and mandarin are on top, mango, ginger and magnolia form the heart, and dry amber, vetiver and patchouli make the base. The amber works as a dry floor under the fruit instead of a sweet cloud. The house makes Anelo at 30% extrait concentration, in 50 ml.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Gold gives amber as a wood. The house lists nutmeg, vanilla, juniper berries, amber woods, coriander seeds and musks in a flat list without tiers, and says the amber wood adds brightness to the coriander, musks and vanilla. In the brand's own words the result is comfortable and reassuring, musky and ambery. This is an eau de parfum of 70 ml.

Dark and resinous
Roja Parfums Amber Aoud has no note called amber at all. The amber effect comes from the base: cinnamon, saffron, patchouli, oakmoss, sandalwood, oud, benzoin, orris, birch, ambergris and musk, under a heart of Rose de Mai, Jasmin de Grasse, ylang ylang and fig. The house calls the balance of sweet, spicy, salty and woody tones "the Amber Aoud Effect". The concentration is Parfum, in 50 ml.

Sweet and syrupy
Les Eaux Primordiales Ambre Supermassive builds on red amber, the gemstone, and aims for the warmth and depth of the stone itself. Peach, apple, cinnamon, pineapple and sesame open it, rose, heliotrope, honey, cardamom and rum form the heart, and black vanilla, amber, saffron, tobacco and musk make the base. The house calls the result syrupy, fruity and spicy at once. It is an extrait de parfum of 50 ml.

Where amber sits in a perfume
Amber is commonly a base note, because resins and woods are heavy materials that fade slowly. Anelo and Ambre Supermassive follow that rule. Il Padrino places dry amber in the heart and Laudano Nero lists black amber at the top, so the rule has exceptions, and Gentle Fluidity Gold gives only a flat list. If the tiers are new to you, our guide to how to read a fragrance pyramid explains them. For amber perfume in general, the amber scent collection and the amber note collection are the quickest way in.
Ambergris as the contrast
Amouage Guidance lists ambergris, not amber, in the base, together with cistus, sandalwood, Akigalawood and vanilla. Pear, frankincense and hazelnut sit on top, and saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus form the heart. Amouage files it under floral and amber, and builds it around the triad of rose, frankincense and ambergris. It was released in 2023, and the house puts 25% perfume oil in this eau de parfum of 100 ml.

How to choose an amber perfume
Decide first whether you want the amber soft, dark or sweet. If you like vanilla and wood, start with the soft and dry group. If you like smoke and spice, start with the dark one, and if you like fruit and honey, with the sweet one. Amber is also the base of much of what houses file as oriental, and our article on oriental perfumes covers that wider style.
Frequently asked questions
What does amber smell like?
Warm, resinous and slightly sweet, often with vanilla and wood. Soft versions are dry and gentle, dark ones lean on resin and spice, and sweet ones add fruit or honey.
Is amber in perfume the same as ambergris?
No. Amber in perfume is a composed accord. Ambergris is a separate material of animal origin, and a few houses, such as Roja Parfums and Amouage, list it by name in their bases.
Is an amber perfume only for winter?
Mostly, but not only. Six of the seven here are tagged for autumn and winter, while Anelo, with dry amber under fresh fruit, is tagged for spring and summer.
