Ginger perfumes

A root that sparkles

Ginger is the underground stem, or rhizome, of Zingiber officinale. Perfumers use the distilled oil, CO2 extracts and rebuilt accords. Fresh ginger is lemony, bright and peppery, with a watery, slightly woody freshness, while dried or aged ginger is warmer, spicier and deeper. Some pyramids name a form, such as ginger essence or ginger syrup.

Spark, bridge or anchor

In the top, ginger gives citrus an edge and some body, so a bergamot or grapefruit opening does not feel thin. In the heart it bridges fresh notes and flowers to the base and adds a clean, dry warmth. In the base, which is rarer, it behaves like a warm spice beside cinnamon, tobacco and amber. Ginger pairs with citrus, orange blossom, rose, vetiver, woods, amber and vanilla, and it keeps sweet fruit and honey from turning heavy.

• Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Emerald uses ginger twice: in the top with bergamot and grapefruit, and as ginger essence in the heart with orange blossom and neroli. Jo Milano Paris files it as fresh spicy.
• Zoologist Bee writes ginger syrup into the top with orange and a royal jelly accord, over broom, heliotrope, mimosa and orange flower, with benzoin, labdanum and vanilla below. Zoologist calls it Waxy Floral Honey.
• Argos Sacred Flame opens with ginger, pepper tree and clove among citrus and peach, moves to rose, tuberose and cinnamon bark and ends in amber, vetiver, Mysore sandalwood and vanilla. Argos files it as Spicy, Woody, Resinous.
• Pernoire Anelo places ginger in the heart with mango and magnolia, under pineapple, pomelo and mandarin and above dry amber, vetiver and patchouli. Pernoire files it as Fruity · Fresh.
• Xerjoff La Capitale lists ginger in the heart with Iranian saffron, leather, amber and rose. Xerjoff files it as Fresh, Floral.
• Roja Parfums Burlington 1819 puts ginger at the head of a long base that continues with cinnamon, cumin, saffron, patchouli, oakmoss and rum, under a citrus and mint top. Roja Parfums calls it Citrus (fresh Ambrée accord).

Fresh ginger or warm ginger?

Check the position and the neighbours. Ginger in the top with bergamot or grapefruit is the freshest version. Ginger in the heart beside fruit, magnolia or flowers is softer. Ginger in the base among cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla reads as warmth rather than sparkle. If you want crisp, pick a perfume that pairs ginger with citrus and musk; if you want round, look for amber, resin or vanilla underneath.
