Note

Tonka bean perfumes

Tonka bean is the warm, hay-like sweetness behind many a base: soft almond and vanilla facets, a dry hint of tobacco and a smoothing effect on woods and resins. The perfumes in our collection that list it run from woody and floral to roasted and gourmand builds.

The seed and its sweet-hay character

Tonka bean is the dark, wrinkled seed of a tall South American tree. Its scent comes mainly from coumarin, a molecule that is sweet and hay-like, with soft almond and vanilla facets. Perfumers work with the bean's absolute, which is more complex than coumarin alone, or with coumarin itself. Maison Crivelli names Venezuela as the origin of its tonka and calls some of its absolutes toasted or roasted.

A base note that bridges

Tonka is mostly a base note. Most of the perfumes in our collection that give a tiered pyramid put it at the bottom, fewer in the heart and rarely in the top. The Maison Crivelli entries list their materials flat. Tonka rounds off woods and resins and links vanilla to cedar or sandalwood. It adds a dry, almost tobacco-like warmth that keeps sweetness from turning sticky, and it pairs with lavender, vetiver, amber, leather and spice.

Perfumes and ways to use it

  • Byredo Bal d'Afrique lists tonka bean absolue at the bottom, with cedarwood, musks and vetiver, under South African buchu, African marigold, bergamot and blackcurrant and a heart of cyclamen, jasmine petals and violet. Byredo files it as floral.
  • Maison Crivelli Oud Stallion names roasted tonka bean absolute from Venezuela in a flat list with cardamom absolute, oud, nutmeg, saffron, rose absolute from Turkey, cedarwood, a leather accord and patchouli. Maison Crivelli calls it leather woody.
  • Ex Nihilo The Hedonist keeps the build short: bergamot and ginger, cedarwood and Akigalawood, then vetiver, musks and tonka bean. Ex Nihilo files it as woody.
  • Fascent Milky No Way places tonka bean in the heart with a whipped cream accord, between black pepper and hazelnut milk above and sandalwood, amber and cashmere wood below. Fascent describes it as milky, woody, mysterious.
  • Lorenzo Pazzaglia Van Py Rhum is the one tiered entry that opens with tonka bean, in a top of four vanillas and rhum. Lorenzo Pazzaglia adds caramel and patchouli in the heart and agarwood, barricaded rhum and black vanilla pod in the base.
  • Tiziana Terenzi Cassiopea writes fava tonka into the base beside sandalwood and musk, below passion fruit, lemon, cassis and fern and a heart of carnation, lily of the valley and rosa tea. Tiziana Terenzi calls it soft floral.

Choosing by the company tonka keeps

Look at what stands next to it. With woods and vetiver, as in The Hedonist, tonka is dry and warm. With cream or milk notes it turns soft and edible. Roasted, as in the Crivelli entry, it leans toward leather and tobacco. Beside flowers, as in Bal d'Afrique and Cassiopea, it sits quietly in the base instead of leading with sweetness. Then check how much sugar the rest of the pyramid adds, because vanilla and caramel push tonka toward dessert while pepper, spice and wood hold it back.

Frequently asked

How does tonka bean differ from vanilla?

Vanilla is creamy and balsamic. Tonka bean is drier, more hay-like and carries a trace of almond and tobacco. They often sit together in a base, where tonka keeps vanilla from feeling plain or sugary.

Is a tonka perfume always sweet?

No. In The Hedonist it sits under cedarwood and vetiver, and in Maison Crivelli Oud Stallion it is roasted and set among oud, leather and spice. Sweetness depends on the vanilla, caramel and sugar notes around it.

Is tonka bean only a base note?

Mostly. Most of the perfumes with a tiered pyramid in our collection put it in the base, fewer in the heart and rarely in the top, and the Maison Crivelli entries list it without tiers.
