Frederic Malle: a guide to the house and its perfumes

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle is a Paris house, founded in 2000, that treats perfumers as authors and prints their names on the bottle. This guide covers the ten Frederic Malle perfumes we list, each with its perfumer, its notes and the idea behind it.

Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady Eau de Parfum 50 ml bottle

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle was founded by Frédéric Malle in 2000 and launched that year with nine perfumes. Malle trained in art history, photography and then advertising, and developed his sense of smell at the perfume-creation company Roure, now Givaudan. The house says it was the first to bring perfumers out of the shadows: it treats them as authors and prints their names on the bottle, the way a publisher puts a writer's name on a book. The ten we list are in the Frederic Malle collection.

What the house stands for

Perfumers are given complete creative freedom, as much time as they need and the finest raw materials, whatever the cost or quantity. The bottles are deliberately minimalist, and the packaging borrows its graphic and colour codes from the Gallimard book covers. The house sells through its own boutiques, three of them in Paris, on Rue Cambon, Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue de Passy. One collection stands apart: Desert Gems, a tribute to Middle Eastern perfumery composed by Western perfumers, with The Night (2014), Promise (2017), Dawn (2018) and The Moon (2019).

What the perfumes have in common

An author. Each of our ten is signed by a perfumer: Dominique Ropion three times, Pierre Bourdon twice, and Maurice Roucel, Olivia Giacobetti, Jean-Claude Ellena, Julien Rasquinet and Ralf Schwieger once each. Nine are Eau de Parfum and L'Eau d'Hiver is an Eau de Toilette, with eight bottles in 50 ml and two in 100 ml. The pyramids on the brand's pages are short, and for four perfumes they give no heart notes at all, so we show them as the house does. The product pages carry no gender label. If a short pyramid leaves you guessing, choosing a niche perfume without smelling it offers a method.

The perfumes we list

By Fragrantica reviews, counted in early October 2026, starting with the most reviewed.

Portrait of a Lady

Dominique Ropion, 2010. The brand presents it as his exceptional rose, with Turkish rose pushed to extravagant proportions and framed by woody tones, amber and incense, and as a new take on the chypre family. Rose is the top note, blackcurrant, raspberry and clove form the heart, and patchouli, sandalwood and frankincense the base. More than 1,600 reviews make it the most reviewed of the ten.

Musc Ravageur

Maurice Roucel, 2000. The house calls it its hottest amber fragrance, a blend without flowers. Bergamot, mandarin and lavender open it, amber, vanilla and musk sit at the heart, and sandalwood and musk close it. The presentation is plain: sensual, confident, straightforward.

Carnal Flower

Dominique Ropion's study of tuberose absolute used in very high concentration. The pyramid has a top and a base only: melon, vegetal notes and the fresh side of tuberose above, the milky side of tuberose and musk below. In between, the brand describes an animalic turn lifted with camphor and dark spices.

Promise

The second volume of Desert Gems, composed by Dominique Ropion in 2017. He recreates the pull of oud as an illusion, and no oud is listed. Pink pepper, rosemary oil and an apple accord open it, Bulgarian rose oil, Turkish rose absolute and clove oil form the heart, and patchouli heart, ambroxan, labdanum and cypriol heart are the base. The brand ties it to the bonds between two people and the sacredness of one's word.

En Passant

Olivia Giacobetti's portrait of lilac, a flower with no natural essence that she recreates: a bright May morning in Paris, dusty petals in the sun, green leaves and crisp stems. Lilac and cucumber are the top notes, white musk and cedar the base, and there is no heart.

L'Eau d'Hiver

Jean-Claude Ellena's warm water: an Eau de Toilette with the clarity of a cologne that also warms the skin, like a light scarf. Bergamot is the only top note, and iris, hawthorn and heliotrope form the base. The brand's key notes add hedione and hay, and its text speaks of sweet almond and honey.

French Lover

Pierre Bourdon, 2007. The house presents it as his idea of a masculine ideal that has nothing to prove. Pimiento, angelica and juniper are the top notes, patchouli, vetiver and frankincense the base. The key notes it lists also include capsicum and galbanum.

Lipstick Rose

Ralf Schwieger's scent of timeless glamour: a star in her dressing room, gliding on lipstick in the mirror. Grapefruit and violet open it, rose, iris and raspberry form the heart, and vanilla and white musk give the sweetness. Violet and iris are the flowers of make-up, the brand notes.

Iris Poudre

Pierre Bourdon's reinvention of the great aldehydic florals of the twentieth century. Rose, violet and ylang-ylang are on top, iris alone is the heart, and sandalwood, musk and tonka bean are the base. The brand describes powdery iris under sparkling aldehydes, with the creamy vanilla of tonka bean.

The Moon

The fourth volume of Desert Gems, created in 2019 with Julien Rasquinet as a tribute to the moon that paces life in the Middle East. Raspberry, lychee and saffron open it, frankincense and Turkish rose form the heart, and oud and leather are the base. The red berries are the surprise, likened by the brand to the fruity scents of hookahs.
