Which Perfume Suits Me? Find a Signature Scent

Five steps lead from what you already like to a short list of perfumes, with one niche perfume for each scent family as an example.

Byredo Mojave Ghost Eau de Parfum 100 ml bottle

When people ask which perfume suits me, they are really asking three smaller things: what they like, how present a scent should be, and which notes to avoid. This guide takes those questions in five steps, from taste to a short list, with one perfume for each scent family along the way. The aim is a signature scent, the one perfume you reach for without thinking.

Which perfume suits me: the route in five steps

First, read your own taste. Second, let it point to a scent family. Third, settle intensity and season. Fourth, choose the notes you want and the ones you avoid. Fifth, try a short list on skin. For guidance, the scent finder on our site works like a short perfume quiz: five questions on who the perfume is for, season, occasion, scent family and intensity, then the perfumes of our collection that fit.

Step 1: start from what you already like

Your taste in other things is the strongest clue. Begin with food, whether you reach for warm pastry and caramel or for lemon peel and fresh herbs. Add places and weather: a pine wood, a summer garden, a sea breeze, cool air with warm spices. People who love sweets often enjoy gourmand perfumes, people who prefer cut fruit and herbs often lean towards fresh or citrus scents, and people who like wood and tea often find woody and aromatic perfumes familiar. Write down three or four likes before you read a single note.

Step 2: let your taste point to a scent family

Scent families are shortcuts: each gathers perfumes with a shared character. Our guide to the fragrance families describes them all. Below is one perfume from eight different houses, one for each of eight families, so that every family has a concrete shape.

For wood, start with Mojave Ghost by Byredo. Ambrette and naseberry open it, magnolia, sandalwood and violet form the heart, and cedarwood, musks and vetiver the base. The house says powdery violet and crisp cedarwood add a quiet strength, which makes it a calm first look at the woody scents.

For flowers, Orphéon by Diptyque sets jasmine in a smoky frame. The house lists juniper berry, cedar, tonka bean and jasmine without tiers and pictures a friendship in a bygone Parisian bar. It is filed under woody and floral, so it suits people who like both. More are gathered under floral scents.

For fresh, try Blue Talisman by Ex Nihilo. Pear, bergamot, ginger and mandarin open it, orange blossom and Georgywood™ form the heart, and Ambrofix™, Akigalawood™ and musks the base. The house balances the pear's freshness with Ambrofix for an airy depth. Other routes to the same clean feeling sit among the fresh scents.

For citrus, Vibrato by Sospiro goes beyond peel. Grapefruit, bergamot, mandarin, ginger and rosemary open it, magnolia, Damascenia rose and blond wood form the heart, and vetiver, patchouli, Indian sandalwood, musk, crystal amber and tonka the base, so the citrus has something warm to rest on.

For sweetness, try a gourmand such as Sunset Hour by Goldfield & Banks. For warmth, look at an amber such as Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian. The house lists violet, oud, Damascena rose, a vanilla amber accord and benzoin, and describes a move from violet through oud and rose into that accord. Compare it with other amber scents.

For herbs and tea, Thé Noir 29 by Le Labo is an aromatic example. The house lists bergamot, fig, bay leaves, cedarwood, vetiver, musk and black tea leaves without tiers, and describes a dry, leafy character from a special extraction of the tea.

For leather, The Moon by Frederic Malle pairs it with fruit. Raspberry, lychee and saffron lead, frankincense (olibanum) and Turkish rose follow in the heart, and oud with leather forms the base. Find more among the leather scents.

Step 3: settle the intensity and the season

Intensity depends partly on concentration and partly on the weight of the base. An extrait is commonly denser than an eau de parfum, and an eau de toilette usually sits lighter than both. Resin, wood and oud bases usually suit cooler weather, citrus and airy musks warmer days. Our tags help here: Vibrato is moderate for spring and summer, while Oud Satin Mood and The Moon are strong for autumn and winter.

Step 4: pick the notes you want and the ones you avoid

Choose two or three notes you love and one or two you would rather avoid, then read each pyramid with them in mind. Where a house gives top, heart and base, the top is what you meet first and the base is what remains as the scent settles. Where it gives a flat list, as for Orphéon, Oud Satin Mood and Thé Noir 29, the house sets no order, so read its description for the movement. A dislike of one note seldom rules out a whole family.

Step 5: how to find your signature scent from a short list

Keep the short list to three perfumes. Spray one on clean skin rather than on paper, let it settle and notice how it changes, then try the next on the other arm; two scents in a day is plenty. Wear the front runner on ordinary days too, because a signature scent is simply the perfume you keep returning to. Once you have chosen, it helps to know how to tell if a perfume is original, since box, bottle and batch code all say something.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my signature scent?

Start from what you like to eat, smell and wear, choose a scent family, then settle intensity, season and notes. Keep a short list of three and wear each on skin before you decide.

What is a signature scent?

A signature scent is the perfume you return to most, the one you wear without thinking. It is a habit, not a rule, and many people keep one scent for each season and still call one of them theirs.

Is there a perfume quiz that suggests perfumes?

Our scent finder asks five short questions: who the perfume is for, the season, the occasion, the scent family and the intensity. It then shows the perfumes of our collection that fit, and you can change any answer.
