Best Oud Perfume: Seven Ways a Perfumer Uses Oud
There is no single best oud perfume, only different partners for the same dark wood. Seven niche perfumes show how fruit, spice, flowers, leather and resin change what oud does.
Anyone searching for the best oud perfume soon finds that the answer depends on one thing: what the perfumer sets against the oud. Oud is a dark, resinous wood note. On its own it can be austere, so houses pair it with something that shapes it, and each pairing gives a different perfume. This guide sorts seven perfumes from our range by that choice. For the material itself, its origin and its cost, read our article on what oud is; none of its examples is repeated here.
How this list of the best oud perfumes was chosen
There is no ranking behind it. We looked for perfumes whose recorded notes name oud, or agarwood, which is the same material under another name, and took one perfume per house. Then we mixed the placements. In five of the seven the pyramid puts oud or agarwood in the base, and two houses publish only a flat list of key ingredients, so no tiers can be given for them. Within those limits we picked the seven that show the widest range of partners.
Four are extraits and three are eaux de parfum, from 50 to 200 ml, and all seven are listed as unisex. That label does not sort them, which matters for the search for the best oud perfume for men, and we come back to it below.
Seven ways to build an oud perfume
Red fruit and rose
Frederic Malle The Moon is the fruit route. The house lists raspberry, lychee and saffron at the top, frankincense (olibanum) and Turkish rose in the heart, and oud and leather in the base. Its own description is of a warm, refined blend of rose, oud and incense that red berries turn into a surprise. The sweetness comes first and the oud follows. It is an eau de parfum of 50 ml.

Saffron and spice
BORNTOSTANDOUT Purple Stain starts with saffron, cinnamon bark, nutmeg, ginger extract, mandarin and bergamot. A heart of orange blossom, caramel, Peru balsam and vanilla follows, and the base holds akigalawood, oud, patchouli, cypriol, Ambrofix and cistus concrete. The brand pictures wine stains spreading over the pages of an old leather journal. Here the oud is the smoky end of a spiced, sweet sequence. It belongs to the brand's Extrait Extrême line, and we list it as an extrait de parfum of 50 ml.

Violet, rose and vanilla amber
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood softens the wood with flowers and sweetness. The house lists violet, oud, Damascena rose, a vanilla amber accord and benzoin, and describes a movement from the violet through the oud and the rose into a full vanilla amber finish. It gives no pyramid, so we cannot say which note is top or base. For more on the amber side, see our explainer on what amber is in perfume. This is an eau de parfum of 200 ml, and we also list the extrait de parfum, in 70 ml.

Leather
Maison Crivelli Cuir Infrarouge sets an oud accord beside a leather accord. The house gives a flat list: Italian bergamot oil, Laotian cinnamon, a raspberry accord, atlas cedarwood, Moroccan orris, Chinese osmanthus, Indonesian patchouli, Madagascan vanilla and Venezuelan tonka bean around those two. The brand paints a night of electronic music with raspberry cocktails and leather seats, and files the perfume under woody fruity. The concentration is extrait de parfum, in 100 ml.

Honey and whiskey
Nishane Nefs puts the oud late in a long pyramid. Honey, violet, sage, saffron and fig sit at the top, rose, osmanthus, geranium, jasmine and nutmeg in the heart, and amber, whiskey, oud, cinnamon, cedarwood, gurjum, leather and vanilla in the base. Nishane calls it its flagship oriental, a modern take meant to work even for people who usually avoid the style. As an extrait de parfum of 50 ml it takes a while to reach the oud.

Tobacco, vanilla and suede
Goldfield & Banks Silky Woods uses the wood's own name, agarwood. Cinnamon and tobacco leaf are the top, ylang-ylang and vanilla the heart, and agarwood, suede, saffron, incense and sandalwood the base. The house says its agarwood comes from the rainforests of Queensland in Australia and was sustainably harvested for perfumery for the first time, a claim that is the brand's own. The family is woody gourmand, in an eau de parfum of 100 ml.

Incense and a bright lift
Les Eaux Primordiales Oud Supermassive makes oud the subject. Mandarin, bergamot and cardamom are on top, peach, osmanthus and passion fruit in the heart, and tobacco, oud, leather and olibanum in the base. Its olibanum is the resin that The Moon above lists as frankincense (olibanum). Together with leather it wraps the wood, while the fruit and osmanthus add a bright touch that keeps the whole from closing in. It is an extrait de parfum of 100 ml.

Best oud perfume for men: what the label tells you
All seven perfumes above are listed as unisex, so the label does not decide between them. What decides is how dry or how sweet the partner makes the oud. If you lean towards a dry, dark oud, look at the ones that put leather, tobacco or incense beside it: Oud Supermassive, Cuir Infrarouge and Silky Woods. If you want it softer, look at those that lean on rose, violet, vanilla or fruit: The Moon, Oud Satin Mood and Purple Stain. Nefs sits between the two, with a sweet start and a leather base.
Where the oud sits and what that means
In the five perfumes with a pyramid, oud or agarwood is a base note. That is why most of them begin with fruit, spice or citrus and let the wood arrive later; the first minutes are not the whole perfume. The four extraits are dense, so one or two sprays are a sensible start, and the same goes for the eaux de parfum with a heavy base. In our catalogue all seven are tagged for autumn and winter, and for evenings and special occasions. Dark, resinous bases usually feel heavy in heat, so keep a light hand in warm weather.
To compare by note, browse every perfume that lists oud in our oud perfumes collection, or the wider family of oriental perfumes. If you prefer a particular strength, the extrait de parfum collection gathers the denser ones, and our explore page is another way into the range.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best oud perfume for men?
All seven perfumes here are listed as unisex, so the label does not decide. Choose by partner: leather, tobacco and incense give a drier oud, while rose, violet, vanilla and fruit soften it.
How does an oud perfume smell?
Oud is woody, resinous and sometimes smoky. In a perfume it takes on the character of its partner: fruit makes it bright, rose and violet make it floral, leather and tobacco make it dry and dark.
When should you wear an oud perfume?
All seven perfumes here are tagged for autumn and winter, and for evenings and special occasions. A dense, resinous base usually feels heavy in heat, so use less in warm weather.
