Note

Patchouli perfumes

Patchouli is the dark, earthy base of perfumery: woody, damp, a little camphorous and sometimes cocoa-like. It deepens roses, steadies sweet notes and gives citrus a dry floor to stand on. These are the perfumes in our collection that list patchouli among their notes.

A leaf that needs time

Patchouli is the leaf of Pogostemon cablin, a plant from the mint family that grows in tropical regions, with Indonesia among the main sources. The leaves are dried and often fermented before steam distillation, and the thick, dark oil is known to improve with age. The note is earthy, woody and damp, with sweet-dark, camphorous and sometimes cocoa-like facets.

Why patchouli anchors a perfume

Patchouli evaporates very slowly, which is why perfumers place it in the base and use it as an anchor. It deepens roses, steadies sweet notes such as vanilla and caramel, and gives citrus a dry, woody floor. It is also the classic partner of oakmoss and labdanum in chypre and amber structures. Refined versions, sometimes listed as patchouli heart, keep the woody sweetness and soften the camphor.

Roles for patchouli

  • Frederic Malle Promise lists patchouli heart in the base with ambroxan, labdanum and cypriol heart, under Bulgarian rose oil, Turkish rose absolute and clove oil. Frederic Malle files it as Woody floral.
  • Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special puts Singaporean patchouli in the heart with cinnamon and leather, under bergamot, geranium, passion fruit and rum and above caramel, labdanum, musk, sandalwood and vanilla. Xerjoff files it as Woody, Oriental.
  • Nishane Hacivat sets patchouli in the heart with jasmine and cedarwood, over a base of clearwood, oakmoss and dry timberwood. Nishane files it as Citrus / Chypre / Woody.
  • Maison Crivelli Oud Cadenza has no tiers: Maison Crivelli lists patchouli oil from Indonesia among cardamom oil, cinnamon bark oil, saffron, an oud wood accord, cocoa butter absolute and myrrh, and calls it gourmand woody.
  • Lorenzo Pazzaglia Black Sea places patchouli in the base with seaweed, white musk, oakmoss and ambergris, under salt, ozone and aquatic notes in the top. See Lorenzo Pazzaglia.
  • Tiziana Terenzi Kirkè holds patchouli in the base with heliotrope, sandalwood, vanilla and musk, below a fruit top of passion fruit, peaches, raspberries, cassis and pears. Tiziana Terenzi files it as Fruity.
  • Zoologist Rabbit sets patchouli first in the base, ahead of musks, hay, white almond, vanilla and a biscuit accord. Zoologist describes it as Carrot Cake Garnished with Dry Hay.

Reading patchouli in a pyramid

If you like patchouli dark, look for it with oakmoss, labdanum, leather or oud, and check the tier: the base gives the full earthy effect. If you prefer it light, look for patchouli in the heart under citrus, or beside fruit, flowers or marine notes, where it works as a quiet woody backdrop. A named origin or form, such as Singaporean patchouli, patchouli oil from Indonesia or patchouli heart, shows that the house has chosen a particular cut.

Frequently asked

Does patchouli have to be heavy and earthy?

No. Patchouli has an earthy, woody, slightly camphorous core, but it can be refined or paired with citrus, marine notes or fruit. The tier and the company decide whether it feels dark or light.

Which notes go with patchouli?

Rose, vanilla, labdanum, sandalwood, vetiver, oakmoss and incense are the classic partners. Patchouli deepens roses, steadies sweet notes and gives citrus a dry, woody floor.

Is patchouli always in the base?

Mostly, because it evaporates slowly and works as an anchor. Some perfumes place it in the heart, where it links flowers or citrus to the woods below. A named form such as patchouli heart shows how it is used.
