Niche Perfume Houses by Country: Where Each Is From

Thirty-four of the houses we carry have a country on record, twelve countries in all. This page sorts the houses by country, links the six regional guides and gives the three countries with a single house and no regional guide, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey, a section of their own.

Thirty-four of the houses in our catalogue have a country on record in our research, and this page sorts them by it: twelve countries, from France with thirteen houses to eight countries with one. Six regional guides go into detail and are linked below. Three countries have exactly one house and no regional guide, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey, so those three houses get their section here, with two perfumes each. Nothing on this page is a ranking: the countries are ordered by their number of houses, the houses alphabetically.

France: thirteen houses

Five were founded before 2010, all of them in Paris: Diptyque, Frederic Malle, Juliette Has a Gun, Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Maison Margiela. They are described in French niche perfume houses. The eight that belong to the 2010s and 2020s are Essential Parfums, Ex Nihilo, Fascent, Fragrance Du Bois, Les Eaux Primordiales, Maison Crivelli, Matière Première and Stéphane Humbert Lucas, and they have a guide of their own, new French niche perfume houses.

Italy: six houses

Lorenzo Pazzaglia, Nasomatto, Orto Parisi, Sospiro, Tiziana Terenzi and Xerjoff are set side by side in Italian niche perfume houses. Two of them publish no notes at all, and one, Sospiro, was founded in Italy and is run from Dubai.

United Kingdom: four houses

Jo Malone London, Penhaligon's, Roja Parfums and Sarah Baker are all recorded in London. Their guide is British niche perfume houses.

Oman and the United Arab Emirates

Amouage was founded in Oman and Al Ambra in Dubai. Middle Eastern niche perfume houses covers both, together with the Dubai chapter of Sospiro.

United States, Canada, Australia and South Korea

Argos, Le Labo and Mind Games are recorded in the United States, Zoologist in Canada, Goldfield & Banks in Australia and BORNTOSTANDOUT in South Korea. All six are in niche perfume houses outside Europe.

Sweden: Byredo

Founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham. The brand describes a sensorial-led approach that turns memories and emotions into objects and experiences, and says it balances Scandinavian minimalism with bold artistic expression. The bottles are minimalist, with a magnetic cap. The ten perfumes we list are in the Byredo collection and the Byredo guide, and the brand labels both perfumes below genderless, so they also sit with our unisex perfumes.

Bal d'Afrique, the most reviewed Byredo in our research, is a tribute to the influence of Africa's cultures on dance, art and music. South African buchu, African marigold, bergamot and blackcurrant are on top, cyclamen, jasmine petals and violet in the heart, and tonka bean absolue, cedarwood, musks and vetiver in the base. We read it line by line in Bal d'Afrique notes.

Gypsy Water is the brand's scent for a free, nomadic way of living: bergamot, juniper berries, lemon and pepper, then incense, orris and pine needle, over amber, sandalwood and vanilla.

Switzerland: Pernoire

An independent Swiss perfume house, registered in Basel and marked Swiss made on its product pages. It was founded in 2020 by two childhood friends, Robin Dünner and Nico Mannino, who develop every composition with the perfumer Andreas Wilhelm. All perfumes are Extrait de Parfum, in two lines: Anima at 25% and Odus at 30%. See the Pernoire collection and the Pernoire guide.

Yuma is the one that looks homeward, to still mountain lakes and clear Swiss alpine air. Swiss mint, peppermint, yuzu and bergamot are on top, alpine breeze, edelweiss, ginger and Cashmeran in the heart, and dry amber, vetiver, musk and patchouli in the base.

Anelo, the most reviewed, is named after pineapple and pomelo and pictures sailors setting out for distant shores: freshly sliced pineapple, pomelo and mandarin, then mango, ginger and magnolia, over dry amber, vetiver and patchouli. Both belong to the Odus line.

Turkey: Nishane

Founded in Istanbul in 2012 by Mert Güzel and Murat Katran; the brand calls itself the first and only Istanbul-based niche perfume brand celebrated globally. The name means mark, sign or symbol. Almost every perfume is an Extrait de Parfum in a square flacon with a gold cap, and each label carries the name of a city. The ten we list are in the Nishane collection and the Nishane guide.

Wūlóng Chá, the most rated in our research, belongs to the first collection of 2015: bergamot, orange, litsea and mandarin on top, oolong tea and nutmeg in the heart, musk and fig in the base.

Ani is named after the ancient city of Ani and follows an Anatolian folk song. Bergamot, green notes, blue ginger and pink pepper open it, blackcurrant, Turkish rose and cardamom form the heart, and the base has patchouli, cedarwood, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, musk and sandalwood.
