Note

Musk perfumes

Musk is the soft, skin-like warmth at the bottom of a perfume: clean, powdery, creamy or faintly animal, depending on the type. It rarely announces itself. It holds the other notes together, rounds off sharp edges and makes a scent sit close to the skin. These perfumes list musk among their notes.

Made in the laboratory

The original musk came from an animal gland, but modern perfumery does not use it. Today's musks are synthetic, and perfumers keep a whole palette of them: white musks that feel like clean linen, powdery musks, creamy ones, and warm, skin-like types that suggest a body rather than a fragrance. Ambrette seed, a plant material, gives a related musky effect. In a pyramid you may see musk, musks or white musk, and all three are variations on this idea.

What musk does

Musk is a base note and one of the longest-lasting materials in a composition. Its job is often structural. It blends the transitions between layers, softens woods and resins, and gives sweet notes a smoother surface. It is also the reason some perfumes feel like a second skin: the effect is more of a halo than a statement. It combines well with sandalwood, amber, vanilla, iris and flowers.

Ways it appears here

Choosing a musk perfume

Decide between clean and warm. White musk with aldehydes, citrus or green notes feels fresh and light. Musk under vanilla, amber or resin feels dense and enveloping. Floral musks sit in between, soft and slightly powdery. If you want a scent that stays quiet and personal, look for musk as the main character rather than as a support, and for short pyramids that leave room for it.

Frequently asked

Is musk perfume made from animals?

Not any more. Modern perfumery uses synthetic musks, and some plant materials such as ambrette seed add a similar effect. The word musk on a pyramid refers to this soft, skin-like family of materials.

What is the difference between musk and white musk?

White musk is the clean, soft, laundry-like type. Plain musk covers a wider range, from powdery to creamy to warm and skin-like. Which one a house uses shapes how fresh or intimate the base feels.

Why do so many perfumes have musk in the base?

Musk is a fixative in effect: it smooths the fade, blends the layers and keeps the scent close to the skin. It supports other notes more than it stands out, which is why it is so common.
