Jo Malone London describes itself as a British lifestyle brand, known for its fragrance portfolio and for its products for the bath, body and home. What the house stands for

The perfumes are sold under two names of the house's own: Cologne, and the richer Cologne Intense. Layering is a house signature. Each product page suggests combiners, other scents from the range such as Grapefruit, Peony & Blush Suede or English Oak & Hazelnut, to wear together for a personal result. The brand says its colognes are made in Britain. Its pages give no founding year, launch years or perfumers, so this guide gives none.

What the perfumes have in common

Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne

The bracing air of the British coast: a windswept shore alive with sea salt, the mineral scent of rugged cliffs and the sound of breaking waves. Ambrette seeds are the top note, sea salt the heart and sage the base, and the brand files it under its woody scents. With close to 1,900 ratings it is the most rated of the ten on Parfumo.

Myrrh & Tonka Cologne Intense

The picture is the golden sand dunes of the Namib desert and the myrrh tree, whose resin scent travels on the hot air. Lavender opens it, Omumbiri myrrh from Namibia is the heart, and tonka bean, with its warm almond and vanilla tones, is the base.

English Pear & Freesia Cologne

Orchards steeped in golden sunshine, in the brand's words: just-ripe pears, fresh and juicy, wrapped in cool white freesias. Williams pear is the top note, freesia the heart and patchouli the base, and the text adds a lift of rose.

Scarlet Poppy Cologne Intense

Set on the wild steppes of southwest Asia, covered in the blooms of the great scarlet poppy. Powdery ambrette is the top note, a bold scarlet poppy accord the heart, and tonka bean, with accents of almond, vanilla and tobacco, the base; the text also mentions velvety iris.

Peony & Blush Suede Cologne

Peonies in full bloom in an English garden. Red apple gives the juicy bite on top, peony, with delicate rose and honey accents, is the heart, and suede adds a supple, warm texture in the base.

Oud & Bergamot Cologne Intense

Built on a Middle Eastern tradition centred on an enveloping haze of oud. Bergamot opens it with the freshness known from Earl Grey tea, dry cedarwood is the heart, and oud, with a gourmand touch of praline, is the base. The brand's text adds black musk and calls the result hypnotic and alluring.

Velvet Rose & Oud Cologne Intense

A celebration of one flower. Clove opens with spicy warmth, Damask rose, picked and distilled at dawn, is the heart, and the smoky depths of oud form the base, with what the brand calls a taste of praline.

Lime Basil & Mandarin Cologne

Citrus trees and aromatic herbs on a cool, crisp breeze. Bright, tart mandarin is the top note, herbaceous basil the heart and warm amberwood the base; in the brand's text, peppery basil and white thyme give the zesty lime an unexpected twist. The brand calls it a modern classic.

Pomegranate Noir Cologne

A seductive, woody scent, in the brand's words. The ruby-rich juice of pomegranate is the top note, a heady, spicy Casablanca lily the heart and smoky guaiacwood the base, and the text adds a spark of pink pepper.

Cypress & Grapevine Cologne Intense
