What a special occasion asks of a perfume

A special occasion, such as a wedding, an anniversary or a celebratory dinner, asks for a perfume with more to say than your everyday one. It is worn in a good setting, photographed, hugged and remembered, which allows richer compositions: layered florals with resin, spiced woods, amber, saffron, oud, leather or a long chypre with many materials.

Richness should still be wearable. Close dancing, crowded rooms and long tables are all reasons to prefer a perfume whose complexity sits in the notes rather than in volume. Choose something you have already worn and liked, not a new scent tried for the first time that morning.

How to choose for a special occasion

Think about the setting, the season and the clothes. A summer wedding outdoors can carry a floral with some air, while an autumn evening can carry saffron, amber and oud. Decide whether you want a perfume that people notice or one that stays personal, and test it on your skin beforehand.
