Saffron perfumes

A thread of crocus with a leathery side

Saffron is the dried red stigma of the saffron crocus, picked by hand from the flower and then dried. Perfumers work with saffron extracts or with rebuilt accords, and some houses name the origin, as in Iranian saffron. The material is dry and bittersweet rather than sugary, and a little of it goes a long way.

Where saffron sits and what it does there

Saffron turns up in all three tiers, and the tier changes its job. In the top it is a bright, diffusive spark beside citrus, juniper or pepper, and its leathery warmth lingers after the opening. In the heart it links rose, jasmine and other flowers to a darker base and gives them a suede-like tone. In the base it joins amber, oud, sandalwood and vanilla, adding a dry bitterness that stops sweet notes from sagging. Rose, amber, oud and leather are its classic partners.

• Byredo Black Saffron pairs saffron with juniper berries and pomelo on top, then black violet, cristal rose and leather accord. Byredo files it as amber.
• Amouage Guidance moves saffron into the heart with rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus, under pear, frankincense and hazelnut and above cistus, sandalwood, ambergris and vanilla. Amouage files it as Floral, Amber.
• Xerjoff La Capitale lists Iranian saffron in the heart with ginger, leather, amber and rose, between a top of caramel, labdanum, peach and strawberry and a base of benzoin, oud and Bourbon vanilla. Xerjoff files it as Fresh, Floral.
• Zoologist Penguin places saffron in the heart with pink pepper and ciste absolute, between juniper berry and ice accord on top and sandalwood, musks, seamoss and suede below. Zoologist describes it as Icy Salty Sea + Suede.
• Fragrance Du Bois Sahraa holds saffron in the base with black pepper, sandalwood, vanilla, amber and a vintage oud, under a grapefruit top. Fragrance Du Bois calls it Woody Spicy.
• Maison Crivelli Oud Maracujá is a flat list: saffron sits among passion fruit accord, rose absolute from Turkey, oud accord, benzoin from Laos, cistus, leather accord and vanilla. Maison Crivelli calls it exotic, woody and fruity.

Choosing between a light and a dense saffron

Start with the company, not the saffron itself. Juniper, citrus, violet or icy notes keep it austere and airy; rose, jasmine and sandalwood make it floral and soft; oud, amber, vanilla and leather turn it dark and enveloping. Then check the tier. A top-note saffron is a quick, bright accent, while one in the heart or base stays through the whole development. A flat list gives no tiers, so read the neighbouring materials to judge the weight.
